The sun shined brightly as it started to set above their heads and the two girls climbed the small mountain. A light breeze flew around, cooling them down from the beating rays. The taller of the two bent down to catch her breath and her long brown hair, that was originally pulled loosely into a ponytail, was now resting on her shoulders freely. She sat down comfortably on the soft green grass, resting her white backpack on her leg and looked at her shorter friend, who was looking at the distance ahead.
"Are we even close to the place? I'm so tired, Lily."
Lily looked down at her best friend, for once in her life getting a chance to be the taller girl. She looked down at her clothing of choice, wearing shorts and a shirt paired with tennis shoes. Lily gave out a long sigh and knew she was going to get a bad tan after this, but there really were no major regrets on her part.
"Come on, Izzy. It's not even that bad. Plus, the weather is amazing."
Izzy let out a long groan and fell onto the grass, stretching her long legs in front of her. She couldn't help it; it'd been too long since she last exercised. She could have done it yesterday but didn't want to out of pure laziness and she was definitely regretting it big time. But the last thing she needed was for Lily to find out about this because the teasing would never end. They had only reached the first hill and she was already tired.
"This is my life now. I have climbed this hill, and now I will die upon it," Izzy groaned again.
"Shut up. We've only been hiking for twenty minutes, Izzy."
"That's too long for me right now."
Lily continued to stare ahead. A smirk began to play on her lips.
Tilting her head, she asked, "You skipped a day, didn't you?"
The silence from her best friend said enough to her. She let out a small chuckle. Seeing Lily about to burst out laughing, Izzy glared at her.
"Shut up."
That did it for Lily and she burst out laughing.
"Okay, you can stop now."
"The great Izzy —who never skips a day to exercise— skipped yesterday. Oh my, I think the world is ending. Wait, is that a flying pig I see?"
"Hardy har har. This is exactly why I didn't need you to find out about this. Besides, are we actually almost there?"
"Oh, we're already here."
"Wait, what?"
Izzy sat up immediately with her eyes wide, staring at Lily, who had a huge grin on her face.
Astounded, Izzy replied with disbelief, "But, there's nothing here. Are you joking with me?"
Lily let out a small chuckle as she stared at her seated friend. She knew Izzy had always wanted to see a sunset on a hill, so when she discovered this place, she knew she had to bring Izzy here.
"I'm not. Stop staring at me like you want to punch me, and look ahead."
Izzy turned like she was told and gawked in amazement.
"I remember you telling me that you've always wanted to see the sunset like this, so I thought, why not?" Lily smiled softly.
The sun was becoming a blend of purple, pink, yellow and orange, its rays dimming slowly as it sank from the two girls' lines of sight. And likewise, the warmth slowing faded away, letting the air become chilly.
The sky became darker and darker.
"Thank you," Izzy said softly. Her eyes still focused on the disappearing sun, now only a whisper in the night sky.
"Was the hike worth it?"
Lily smiled, sitting down next to Izzy and enjoying the moment with her.
"Definitely."
They stared at the sky, knowing completely that the sun had already vanished. Neither of them wanted to leave, so they waited for the moon to rise up and shine its light.
"So," Lily began, "are you going exercise tomorrow?"
Izzy let out a laugh.
"That's not going away anytime soon, is it?"
"Nope."
And the two girls started laughing again, both cherishing the small moment of relaxation and happiness they experienced just then.
