How Do I Feel About Leaving School?

School's out. What does that mean to you? Some people can't wait to leave school and head back to their hometown, while others don't want to leave their friends behind. Like many students, I fall somewhere in between. How do I feel about summer break? Glad you asked.

1. It's TOO HOT.

I hate the heat and humidity of my hometown. It's too hot, but I'm glad I can stay inside or play in the hose with my sisters instead of having to walk to and from classes.

2. I have to leave my best friends.

Seeing my friends leave to go to their homes is one of the saddest experiences I've ever had, and not being able to see them for three months breaks my heart.

3. I get to see my best friends.

However, I get to see my best friends from my pre-college years that are still my best friends. They come home from their schools, and I come home form mine, and party. Not really, we just watch movies and talk, but still.

4. I have to sleep on the bottom bunk of my sister's bed.

No one likes bunk beds. They just aren't good for adults. I am an adult (kind of), and they just aren't comfortable. I have my own room at school. My own bed. My own space. I always miss it when I come home.

5. I get to be in an actual CITY.

Since my school is in the middle of nowhere, I enjoy being close to Wal-Mart, fast food and everything else. I enjoy just walking around shopping venues and looking at all of the pretty things. You can't do that when you're surrounded by cow fields and the nearest civilization is 20 minutes away.

6. NO SCHOOL WORK.

I mean, who likes that, anyway? Sorry to the people taking summer classes, you guys can skip this one.

7. I can read as much as I want.

I can read books and not worry about my brain freaking out, saying "You should be writing that paper."

8. Best of all, I get to be with my family.

I successfully surprised them on the day I came home. I told them I couldn't come home until Saturday afternoon, but I came home Friday night instead. They had no idea, and it was beautiful. I missed them a lot, and I enjoy being able to come home to them in the summertime.

As much as I hate the heat and leaving my friends and my bedroom, I love seeing my family and taking care of my sisters, and my family and friends at home make leaving school totally worth it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
