Hello, Summer!

My thoughts as we begin summer break.

Hello, Summer!
Huffington Post

School just let out for summer break and I think we are all feeling pretty relieved. I don’t think the reality has completely hit me yet, but I am so excited to have a break. Here are some thoughts I have about the upcoming summer:

It’s so nice to be out of school!

I think this is the initial thought we all have when summer break comes. No more homework, no more 8:00 a.m. classes, no more essays or tests. No more stress, if I’m being honest. It feels so nice to just be free from it all. It’s such a relief after the craziness of final tests.

I want to go to the beach.

What says summer more than sand and sun? After being cooped up inside florescent lit classrooms classrooms all semester, being out in the fresh air with the sun warming my skin sounds like paradise.

I really don’t want to get sunburned, though.

I love the beach, but the beach doesn’t always love me. I have fair skin, and I always manage to get sunburnt, no matter how much sunscreen I put on.

I finally have time to catch up with my friends!

With the craziness of school and my job, I often don’t get to see my friends as often as I’d like. I hate thinking that any of my friends could feel that I don’t value our friendship because of how busy I always seem to be. Summer is the perfect time to catch up and hang out with everyone and make sure they know just how much I do value our friendships despite the time apart.

Wow, free time. What is it and what do I do with it?

I’ve spent all semester dreaming of summer and the bliss it would bring. Now that it’s here, what do I do with all this free time? After having every day pre-planned and dominated by schoolwork, it’s so nice to be able to choose what to do with my time. But, what do I want to do with it?

Sleeping in is the best feeling in the world.

Sleeping in is honestly my favorite part of summer. 8:00 a.m. classes are no joke, and, let’s face it: I’m not a morning person. It’s a happier day for me and those around me when I get to sleep in. I missed a lot of sleep during the semester, and now it’s finally time to catch up on it.

It’s so nice to be able to read what I want.

Okay, I know not everyone will agree with this one. I love to read, but when I’m in school, I often don’t have time to read for pleasure. I’m too busy reading British literature and critical analyses and writing papers on said literature during the semester. Summer is me time, and one of the most “me” things I can do it enjoy a good book.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
