I feel like I've been waiting for this day for a billion years, but it's actually only been 21 *pauses for laughter even though that was a terrible joke*. In those two decades, the anticipation, anxiety, fear, denial, and excitement have been accumulated into several thoughts.
1. It's about damn time!!!
2. Having a December birthday is quite the struggle. All my friends are going to start turning 22 in, like, three weeks. Sigh.
3. But, hey! I can finally legally drink with everyone!!
4. I can't wait to get ID'd. I. cannot. wait. I'm actually anticipating being asked, "May I see some ID?" YES. YES, YOU MAY.
5. I know that my teenage years ended at 19, but does anyone really take you seriously at 20? I feel like 21 is like the unofficial transition into adulthood.
6. That's not okay, though... I'm not ready to be an adult.
7. I NEED TO DO SOMETHING RECKLESS. I need one last hurrah, one more celebration of no adult expectations. Let me be a crazy child for just a little longer.
8. No. *Takes deep breath* I got this. Bring it on, adulthood!
9. I need to celebrate. I'll go out to a fancy bar with my friends and get cute guys to buy me drinks.
10. But I don't want to... I just want to curl up in bed and watch a movie or something.
11. Is that what "adulting" is? Answer: I don't know!!!
12. Gosh, I feel old. If only I turned 21, like, three years ago. I would've been so much more excited.
13. I would probably be more excited if I went out wearing one of those ridiculous "Birthday Babe" sashes. As silly as those are, I've always secretly wanted one.
14. This is my last birthday at college... Wait. I'm graduating college soon.
15. The NCLEX, student loans, paying bills, living alone... HELP. Mom? Dad? Anyone?
16. *Sigh* I definitely want to go out now, considering I'll probably never have the time once I graduate.
17. Getting ready to go out is such a struggle though... What do I even wear? I feel like I should wear a dress or something. But it's December. And it's cold.
18. Guess I'll just go out in a pair of sweatpants and a parka. #StayWarm
19. Oh, look... It's snowing outside. Right on cue, Mother Nature. It has snowed on my birthday for the last 20 years, why ruin the streak now?
20. And here I go, wondering why I had to be born during the coldest season of the year
(Shout-out to my parents though – thanks for having me, Mom and Dad).
21. New plan: Wrap myself in a fuzzy blanket with a glass of wine and my Netflix account. Yes. I like this plan. *Self high-five*
It's finally here. I'm not really sure how to react, but this is a start. Happy 21st birthday, self... You made it. Barely.
