Every breakup is hard, no matter how much you or those around you try to sugar-coat it. Almost everyone goes through it at one point or another. So, here’s a few things that you need to hear.
You’re going to be sad, and that’s okay. Don’t let anyone force you to “go out and have fun” to forget your ex. Take the time that you need, and when you’re ready, it’ll feel great to be around people again. But there is no rush.
It’s inevitable: you’re going to check their social media. No matter how adamant your friends are about blocking them and unfollowing them, we all know how hard it is to stop ourselves from just taking a peek. But don’t let yourself do it constantly, and don’t obsess over every little thing they post. Overanalyzing every word they say will just cause you to think too much. Don’t dwell on anything.
As much as it hurts to talk about it, it feels so much better to get it off your chest. Keeping all of your feelings bottled up will only keep your mind racing. Talk to a best friend or a parent, and tell them how you’re feeling. They care about you and are going to help you through it.
Seeking out a rebound may seem like a good idea at first, but it just ends up making things more complicated, and possibly ends up hurting the person you’re rebounding with. Being alone is difficult, especially if you’re used to always having someone around. But a rebound will only make things more difficult for you, and the temporary fulfillment they bring won’t last long.
After a month or so, you’re going to want to text them. Whether it be to rehash old arguments or to just check up, it’s probably in your best interest to steer clear. As much as you want to talk to just to have some sort of contact with them, it will only worsen the situation and how much you miss talking to them. Instead, maybe write out what you would say to them, or talk it out with a friend.
As daunting as it may seem, you won’t be alone forever. But while you are on your own, take this time to do things for you. You’re now able to focus all of your attention on bettering yourself, doing things that you want to do, and putting all of your energy into achieving things for you. Doing this will not only give you fulfillment but will make you realize how much you deserve and will better prepare you for future relationships.
