Why is it that people love accents? Why do we get hot and bothered whenever we hear them? Why does an accent make someone 10 times more attractive?
The reality about accents is that everyone loves them. Being wooed by an accent is not just an American thing. It's not the specific accent that gets us all nervous, but what that accent represents. If you have an adventurous soul, then accents give you a sense of thrill. We like things that are different and make us feel worldly. We see accents as a chance to become more cultured and have a romantic affair with the attractive foreigner.
We are attracted to cultures different from our own, so when we meet someone who represents that we are intrigued by this idea of adventure, our mind creates preconceived ideas of other countries and what they represent, so we gravitate to people who represent that.
However, what do these accents make us feel?
They are an escape.
We all dream of being able to venture out, and get up and abandon everything to travel. Seeing the world has a sense of thrill that attracts us to these desires. Individuals with accents fulfill that need to explore and learn about a world different from yours.
Exotic romances and foreigner flings is something most people only fantasize about. The ability to make it a reality sparks something in people that makes them fall head over heels in love.
They will give you hope for the "What if?"
What if we fall in love? What if we get married? What if we have kids? I will have to move to France, Italy, Australia, and so on.
According to the British Council, accents are associated with social groups that represent regions or social standings. Thus, we may be attracted to the kind of group we would be entering, if learned more about their accent.
We are caught up in this idea of new and different, that we start planning what this individual can bring to you. They are an open door for you to be enriched with their culture. We want the life that it brings, not just the accent itself.
The accent is able to transport you to this world that you feel you were born to be a part of. I am no exception to this rule. I love an accent as much as the next hopeless romantic. The truth about accents, is that there is a person behind that dialect, and even though we are flustered by the exotic sound, we should get to know them as people, not a fantasy.
