Writing isn’t for everyone. Sure, everyone has the ability to write but being able to write and enjoy writing are two very different things. I guess I’m one of the few that enjoying writing. Although writing can be truly amazing at times, it isn’t always the easiest job. All writers don’t constantly have ideas flowing through their minds like Grand Central Station. All writers run into this problem known as a writer's block. And it sucks.
Writer’s block is when a writer literally has no idea what to write about or how to even get started on a new project. It’s a pain in the ass. Naturally most writers are very artistic and enjoy producing content, however, when that content is nonexistent, it makes us unexplainably frustrated. Nothing written feels good enough and ideas feel uninspired, however, since all we’re really motivated to do is write, we write.
It’s a slow and painful process. Sometimes in order to help alleviate the stress of writer's block we often find ourselves trying to find ways to get inspired. Get motivated to do something. To find something, somewhere, that’ll give us an idea for something, anything. Some inspiration that’ll make us say, “I don’t hate writing. I don’t hate my work.”
At times the search for inspiration can be a lost cause and other times it can truly be helpful. Unfortunately I haven’t been that lucky. I'm currently in the midsts of experiencing the longest writer’s block of my life. I'm not sure what happened. One week I was writing and excited to do so and the next I hated every idea I had and everything I wrote. Every week to follow had me convinced that I was back to myself. Ready to write content that would make people question ideas and feel inspired. However, like I said before, I'm not that lucky.
So when I sat down this week to write an article and I had no idea what to write about I decided to lean into the irony and write about writer’s block.
I figured it was a topic I was very passionate about; I mean, I hate it. I thought it would help my writing find some passion again. I don’t know if it’s going to help, to be honest I don’t think it will work. But that’s besides the point.
Writer’s block is probably one of the worst things a writer can come across. But it’s what we do. Yeah it’s annoying and it makes us hate our passion at times but it’s worth it. If we didn’t have writer’s block at times we wouldn’t learn how develop as writers and as people.
It’s the writer’s block that helps us to become better. It requires us to search for inspiration and find new ideas we never would have thought about. Instead of resisting the writer’s block, lean into it. Embrace it. Take it for what it is and try and learn from it. Don’t get pissed. Don’t say you suck, just enjoy it. Know that it won’t last and that this is just a part of the process.
