The recent presidential campaign is nothing short of entertaining. The constant bickering and debating of political issues are to be expected; however, there is something that is particularly disturbing about this year’s campaign that has me asking more questions that remain unanswered. The most troubling of these questions is the evangelical support of the GOP candidate, Mr. Donald Trump.
Now, before you begin to defend your reasoning in voting for Donald Trump I feel it is important that you know that I genuinely do not care whom you vote for. This is not me trying to sway your opinion in who you feel will turn this country around. It’s your individual vote, and whether you feel like Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton is the best fit for the job then I can respect that. However, if you are an evangelical Christian and you claim that Donald Trump is the one who God has sent to turn this country around I just have a few things for you to think about.
For starters, God has given us a wonderful opportunity to come to know Him and His ways through the Bible that is readily available to us. Living in the United States we are extremely blessed to have the opportunity to access God’s Word whenever we wish. Consequently, in His Word God teaches that one can observe a Christian by the fruits that he bears. This isn’t something that we have to search for; in fact it is directly addressed to us in the book of Galatians. It is titled the "Fruits of the Spirit." The fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. I am not going to expand on this. Rather, I am going to ask a question. Does Donald Trump exemplify these traits?
Just because Mr. Trump makes enticing promises to those craving a conservative nation, does not make him God-sent. Donald Trump has a very smart tactic; he plays on the emotions of people. I am not making any comparisons here nor alluding to the fact that someone is evil. However, I feel it important to remind you that God’s greatest enemy preys on the emotions of His children.
Satan plays on the fears of people. Now, I am not ignorant. If I told you that I was completely at peace with the direction our world is headed I would be lying to you. However, I am reminded countless times to trust in God and not to fear. Lest I remind you, God tells us not to fear 365 times in His Word -- a reminder for each day. Therefore, I will not give in to what my emotions are telling me; rather I am trusting that God has it under control. That being said, Donald Trump is telling us to fear. Through this strategy, he is gaining supporters by the day. But, let me ask you this. Where in His Word does God tell us to fear? Therefore, why would he send someone who tells us to?
Trump tells the American people that those unlike us are trying to take us over. He tells us that Islamic people are all evil, and they are only out to kill. Those across the border in Mexico are trying to take us over and steal our jobs. Stating that Americans must come first and that the number of immigrants must decrease. The number of evangelical Christians in awe with this political approach absolutely baffles me; once again I am not going to expand on this. Rather, I want to leave with you a simple fact. Jesus Christ and his family were immigrants.
My purpose is not to sway your opinion in the upcoming election. I’ve said it once and I will say it again. I genuinely do not care whom you vote for. However, I do have offense when Christians claim Donald Trump is God’s sent messenger. In no way, shape, or form does Donald Trump align with either God’s plan or Christ’s personality. When you claim that Donald Trump is God’s candidate you are painting a false picture of Christ to other people. If you want to vote for Donald Trump, then that’s fine -- just leave me and other Christians out of it.
