I am a self-proclaimed lover of the oldies. There is just something about black and white television that is just so simple and classic. Life in decades past seemed so easygoing and fun that I can't help but wish that I was born in the decades of drive-ins and sock-hops.
On the other hand, there are just some modern day television that I can binge watch for days on end. I see airings that feature storylines of crime-stopping heroines and wish I had an ounce of courage that the female character displays so well.
So, for the lover of all TV genres, like myself, I made a list of my all-time favorite TV from past and present that always satisfies my Netflix binge-watching needs.
1. "Bones"
This is a prime-example of the crime-fighting female lead portrayed by Emily Deschanel. Forensic Anthropologist by day and the second part of a crime-fighting duo by night. The show is so easy to get into that sometimes I feel a sense of pride when Booth and Bones solve a murder case because I feel as if I too was along for the ride. Definitely my all-time favorite crime show ever.
2. "Frasier"
Somewhere among my top three, "Frasier" is one of the funniest sitcoms I have ever seen to date. As a spinoff of another huge success, Cheers, the show is a mix of funny sophistication that keeps you on your toes. For eleven hit seasons the show taught viewers the most random facts about psychology and wine to opera and dating while still keeping us informed of the love story between Daphne and Niles and countless other fiascos that may happen. Countless others have ranked it as one of the greatest TV shows of all time, they are correct, but you'll just have to watch it for yourself to see what I mean.
3. "The Dick Van Dyke Show"
I know people young and old who adore the show, as do I. The young married couple, played by Dick Van Dyke (what a surprise) and Mary Tyler Moore, are the type of couple that I someday hope to be like. Rob (Van Dyke) spends his days as a comedy writer for the Alan Brady Show and Laura (Moore) spends her days as a typical 60s housewife but when given the chance to attend a party they are a class act. Both are multi-talented and armed with fabulous dancing and singing skills that will blow you away. They are the reason I would give anything to live in the 60s. It's also another one of my top three favorites.
4. "American Horror Story"
If you live in the 21st century and have never seen an episode of the amazingness that is "AHS" then we need to have a serious sit-down. You can never know what to expect when you hear the eerily, creepy theme song (unless of course you've watched every season three times like me) because something surprising and totally unexpected happens on every new episode. In future years, we will be calling "American Horror Story" a classic.
5. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"
After much love and popularity on the Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary went on to star in her own series, in the 1970s. She breaking boudaries at the time as the lovable, Mary Richards. One of the first female women on television to have a real-life career and be a single women, the show was instant hit and still talked highly of today in the world of entertainment.
6. "Younger"
Sutton Foster is a forty year-old women who pretends to be a twenty-six year-old to land the job of her dreams. Need I say more?
7. "The Golden Girls"
Sophia, Blanche, Rose and Dorothy. Four women that proved that older women can still have fun no matter what age they are. If you do not rank this as the number one show of all time then I am very upset with your poor decision making skills. Although there may only be one Golden Girl left to make us laugh, we were fortunate enough to have them grace our screens on a weekly basis.
8. "Bewitched"
Elizabeth Montgomery, like Mary Tyler Moore, broke records in the 60s when she portrayed a female witch trying to live life normally in the modern world while being married to Darrin Stephens, a mortal. A first, it was believed that she show would be far from a hit but the numbers don't lie, the show went on to be one of the biggest hits of the 60s.
Here is a list of other favorites of mine. I like to call this list Honorable Mentions:
1. "The X-Files"
2. "The Nanny"
3. "Gilmore Girls"
4. "I Love Lucy"
5. "The Carol Burnett Show"
6. "Parenthood"
7. "The Munsters"
8. "The Brady Bunch"
9. "Desperate Housewives"
10. "The Whispers"
