Environmental Trivia
  1. Environmental Studies covers…
    1. Ecological Conservation
    2. Over Population
    3. Food Resources
    4. Pandemics/Epidemics/Toxicology/etc.
    5. Birth Control Rights
    6. All of the Above and some
      1. 6 is correct. Environmental Studies has a very large range. All of the issues above also can be linked back to climate change. But that is a discussion for another day.
  2. Which of these is NOT a greenhouse gas?
    1. Water Vapor
    2. SO2
    3. CO2
    4. O2
    5. O3
      1. 4 is oxygen. Combinations such as O2 and N2 (nitrogen) aren’t greenhouse gases because the electrical distribution is not effected by infrared radiation.
  3. True or False: We must eliminate all CO2 if we want to maintain a stable environment?
    1. False: Co2 has been here long before we have. Many species depend on CO2 such as plants. All of these dangerous gases are okay as long as they are being exported in a rate that the environment can clean up.
  4. What is the IUCN Red List?
    1. Lists toxic chemicals in products
    2. Lists toxic algal blooms
    3. Lists endangered/threatened species
    4. Lists amounts of mercury in the atmosphere
    5. Lists nations producing the most greenhouse gases
      1. 3 is correct. it will show you all different animals with different levels of “endangerment”. Check it out; it’s pretty cool.
  5. Why are algal blooms so bad for the environment?
    1. When there is an algal bloom, the algae suck the oxygen out of the water and block sunlight from reaching underwater producers. Yes fish need air to survive, that is what the gills are for. So yes, a fish CAN drown.
  6. What human products produce CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbon)
    1. refrigerants
    2. biomass fires (wood, corn, etc)
    3. creating plastics
    4. oil spills
    5. cars
      1. 1 refrigerants. Aerosols such as hairspray include CFC’s. They bond with O3 (ozone, three oxygen molecules) and remove one oxygen from the mix. Since we learned above that O2 is not a greenhouse gas, it will let ultraviolet radiation through. This can be linked to different ailments such as cancer.
  7. Did humans introduce greenhouse gases into the atmosphere for the first time?
    1. Yes, during the Industrial Revolution
    2. Yes, during modern times
    3. No, plants created them
    4. No, they’ve been here long before us
      1. 4 is correct. GHG’s have been in the atmosphere long before we are here. They protect us from Ultraviolet Radiation and keep heat in the earth. Without them, we would be popsicles with melanoma. The issue is that we are producing too many, capturing heat, and the CFC’s are breaking down the ozone that protects us from radiation.
  8. What is the environmental term: thermal expansion?
    1. As things heat up, the earth’s crust will expand due to excited atoms trying to escape the mantle
    2. As things heat up, the ocean water will encroach on land because the water molecules want to separate
    3. As things heat up, plants will grow horizontally to out compete other plants
    4. As things heat up, there is a more likely chance they will combust due to particle activity
      1. It’s 2, but 4 would be epic.
  9. If we continue usage at the current rate, what will happen to ocean resources such as fish?
    1. Humans will start to implement fish farming but that will decrease genetic diversity
    2. By 2050, the oceans are predicted to be “dead” almost all fish species gone
    3. We will force evolution upon the ocean, creating larger animals that can withstand our fishing techniques
    4. All the fish will migrate to the equator due to desirable temperatures
      1. 2 is correct and it is very scary. We eat fish at a rate that they cannot reproduce.
  10. True or False: Plants do not have genders.
    1. False: Plants do indeed have genders. Flowers are essentially landing pads for bees that get the pollen stuck on their legs to bring to other plants. but flowering plants are not the only ones that have genders. Skinny and short pine cones will produce a pollen dust (sperm) that will blow off and stick to the thicker/stickier pine cones that have their eggs inside.
  11. The effects of climate change are;
    1. severe weather events
    2. severe drought
    3. salt leaking into aquifers
    4. crop failure
    5. human diseases
    6. All of the above
      1. All of the above. It’s that bad. Google will tell you.
  12. What is an invasive species?
    1. A species that feeds off of another
    2. A species with unknown origins
    3. A species that is new to science
    4. A species from another place that does harm to another ecosystem
      1. 4, bet you can’t name some.
  13. Name any invasive species in NYS
    1. Emerald Ash Borer, Phragmites, Asian Longhorned Beetle, Gypsy Moth, Sirex Woodwasp, Hemlock Wolly, Adelaide, Viburnum Leaf Beetle, etc.
  14. Who is Henry David Thoreau?
    1. An explorer from the era when America was discovered
    2. An author who wrote about the environment
    3. An famous conservationist from the 1970’s
    4. A founding father of the National Park System
      1. 2, he wrote the book Walden about Walden pond where he lived for sometime. It was during the Romantic era where writers portrayed the environment as a calming and almost religious experience.
  15. Is water a renewable resource?
    1. Yes, it can be replenished within a human lifetime via the water cycle. But the rate of pollution and the kind of toxins being put into the water are not all removed by municipal water systems or flushed out by the environment.
  16. True or False: The effects of climate change CANNOT be seen today.
    1. False: Droughts are occurring, weather is getting more severe (i.e. Sandy), animals are disappearing, people in island nations of micronesia have to move due to salt in their water and crop failure, etc.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
