Embrace The 'Treat Yo Self' Mentality

The end of the semester for any student can get a little crazy. Don't forget to "treat yo self."

Embrace The 'Treat Yo Self' Mentality

With the end of the semester fast approaching, it’s prime time for students to start falling apart. Those endless papers, reading assignments, and group projects just seem to keep piling up and it is far too easy to get buried under piles and piles of work. Not to mention that there’s some event or another going on nearly every single day this month whether it’s an extra credit lecture, organization function, or an end-of-the-year recognition banquet. During stressful times like these, remember the little things that make you smile.

You might be thinking, “Well, of course” or “This is easily the most clichéd thing I’ve heard all day.” And you might be right. Essentially, this is just a friendly reminder to take care of yourself and make sure that you have something to smile about, no matter how rough things may seem. Negativity is contagious and it only takes one little thing—a social media post, a wayward comment, or a grade that maybe didn’t meet your expectations—to get you down and affect the entirety of your day. But the beauty of that situation is that it, likewise, only takes one little thing thing to make your day just a little bit brighter.

I’m currently writing this after an overwhelming weekend of playing “catch up” with my classes. After a slow morning of hitting snooze a total of six times and dreading the moment when I had to leave the comforting cocoon of my bed, I found myself trudging around on campus in a decidedly irritable mood. That was until I decided to make a stop and treat myself to coffee. It sounds ridiculous, I know, but I felt a little better about taking on the day with a white chocolate mocha in hand. I honestly walked out of the library café with a slightly crazed smile on my face because I was laughably happy at my special treat and because I was self-aware of how absurd I looked. My point is that you should take the time to “treat yo self.”

It’s easy to wear yourself down, so don’t let your friends or roommates shame you for watching your favorite episode of “Parks & Rec” or “Grey’s” during a study break. Reward yourself for finally finishing that term paper with your favorite comfort food. Get energized by picking up your favorite caffeinated drink between class and work. Make yourself stop what you’re doing for 30 minutes and enjoy the weather outside. Embrace that “Treat Yo Self” mentality and you’ll feel a little better about yourself.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
