Elizabeth Warren was the first major Democrat to announce her bid for president. Warren has always been there in the polls, usually in the top five in most. Her populist, Bernie Sanders similarity is drawing several Democrats her way. The Massachusetts Senator was once in the private sector, then on the board for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, her focus has been on the economy.
Kamala Harris, the former Attorney General from California, was once up there with Senator Warren in most polls. Coming usually in fourth, sometimes third. The California Senator has dropped off since the last debate. Why is this?
The two women candidates, the only two women in the top five have been splitting among the polls. Senator Warren keeps climbing and Harris keeps falling. Warren is a firebrand type of Democrat from Massachusetts. In 2016 she said, "I'm going to fight my heart out to make sure Donald Trump's toxic stew of hatred and insecurity never reaches the White House." She hasn't been afraid to go on offense against the President.
In current polls, Warren stands at third not too far behind Bernie Sanders. Kamala Harris is back in the single digits, with some polls giving her 8% and others putting her at 5. It looks like Democratic supporters are moving towards the progressive populism that Elizabeth Warren is promoting. Of course, in primaries, the more one-sided you are the better because you want the support of your base. Both Sanders and Warren want this sector of the party.
Kamala Harris? Well, we don't really know if shes progressive like Warren or moderate, like Joe Biden. She varies on issues, from keeping private insurance in her healthcare plan to legalizing recreation marijuana use. Her last debate performance was a little lackluster compared to her first, and the other candidates are trying to exploit her record as Attorney General in California. This could be hurting her among Democratic voters.
Remember, we are still six months out from the Iowa Caucuses, less than a month until the next debate, and over a year until the election. Warren could keep surging, or will Harris rebound? It's another waiting game. The best bet will be to watch the debate in September.
