The United States Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT) has now won its third World Cup after beating Japan in a rematch of the 2011 World Cup Finals. Not only are the ladies trailblazers in the game of soccer, they do other gnarly stuff as well. Read on to enlighten yourself.
1. The USWNT won the first ever FIFA Women's World Cup in 1991.
This World Cup took place 60 years after the first men's tournament. It was poorly attended and most tickets were given out for free, but it set the stage for what was to come ... like two more wins by the USWNT.
2. They haven't always been paid to play.
Yeah, you know Lebron James, who makes $21.57 million a year? Yeah, they don't live that elegantly. Many get paid less than $15 an hour. However, they still take the field every single game, do what they love and represent their country.
3. They write children's books.
Forward Alex Morgan, 26, not only plays soccer, she also writes children's books. They are called "The Kicks" and are aimed at empowering young girls to stay strong continue playing soccer no matter what obstacles they face.
4. Their goalie is the best in the world (according to her).
Goalie Hope Solo, 33, has been a goaltender for the USWNT for 15 years, and there are no signs that she will be retiring anytime soon. She is credited with the U.S. record for most career shutouts. She also holds the records of most appearances (176), wins (135) and consecutive minutes played (1,256).
5. They balance soccer and motherhood.
Amy Rodriguez, Christine Rampone, Shannon Boxx and Stephanie Cox are all mothers. For some people motherhood is tough enough on its own, but these ladies balance that as well as being superwomen.
6. They support equality.
Midfielder Megan Rapinoe, 29, and forward Abby Wambach, 35, are both in relationships with females which has prompted the whole USWNT to promote equality among everyone. On the day that the Supreme Court passed SCOTUS, almost all of the girls on the team posted about their support for the bill over social media.
7. They're hilarious.
They're obviously a really close team, which is obvious by this video of them making fun of superstar forward and leading scorer, Abby Wambach.
8. They're amazing!
