This year has been quite the whirlwind. As a college student, the hardest change I had to face was having all my classes online. I'm a person who learns best through visual and in-person instruction, so doing well this semester was a challenge. Remote learning not only made my classes harder, but it also challenged my mental health. Being cooped up in my house and not having human interaction on daily basis took its toll. I was forced to learn a lot when it comes to my schooling, but also my personal and mental health. However, I am grateful for all the things I learned this year. None of these lessons would be possible without the hurdles thrown my way this semester. Here are four tips that are sure to make our virtual semesters more enjoyable!
1. Friends truly make a difference.
The most important lesson that I learned from being forced to take all online classes is the importance of staying in touch with my friends. Being part of a sorority definitely helped keep me sane. It helped give me excuses to get out of the house and bring some normalcy back into my life.
2. Build relationships with your instructors.
Teachers do have an impact on your learning experience. The videos, homework instructions, textbooks, and discussion boards all make a difference when learning new content. One of my teachers did an amazing job at making the class feel the same way it would have in person. The coursework wasn't heavy, and the instructor provided all the necessary tools to succeed. However, I will say that it is also up to students to reach out if they need help or are struggling with their online classes.
3. Stay involved on campus.
Even if your classes are online, stay involved on campus. College is meant to be a fun experience, and it doesn't last forever. I was lucky that my school made the effort to keep students involved through safe events on campus and virtual events off campus this semester. Even if you are taking classes online, it doesn't mean that you can't still join school clubs or go to school events.
4. Don't underestimate personal motivation.
I learned the power of motivation and the effect it has school this semester. Learning what makes you motivated will not only help when it comes to online classes, but throughout life. Life takes effort, but staying motivated and having goals will make your experiences easier. Having a to-do list was a must this semester. Checking things off my to-do list brought me a wave of motivation that aided me in completing the next thing on my list. Learn what works for you, and make sure to utilize it.
