That Feeling When Your "Dream School" Doesn't Live Up To Expectations Is Too Real For Me

It is absolutely absurd that at the age of seventeen we are expected to know what we want to accomplish in our lives. The four+ years spent in school are intended to shape you to be the well-rounded individual the job market is seeking. People spend their entire lives attempting to uncover what their purposes are; maybe this is because in college they were unable to find their passions and destiny. Sound like a lot of pressure? Well, it is.

Attending the school that is right for you is extremely important. It's sad when you realize that maybe your number one choice isn't what you thought after all. So, what happens if you think you made the wrong decision? Sure, transferring is always an option, but discovering why your expectations failed you will make you stronger and open your mind to paths you never thought possible.

First and foremost, it is crucial you find the root of your distress. Colleges today offer hundreds of different clubs, teams, and resources. If you are unhappy, chances are you haven't found your niche yet.

Perhaps not loving your school is the result of having an awful roommate, or taking too many classes in a semester (all of which are things that can be changed). It is important to identify what the cause is, and from there the solution is simple: change your mindset.

Okay, kind of simple. Changing your outlook on anything is a great undertaking and will always be a challenge. But the good news is that it is achievable. Find out what you truly want to achieve and set daily intentions that work towards accomplishing that end goal.

For example, if your goal is to transfer to Penn State, find out why this is. Maybe it is because it is a big school. If this is the case, most likely your real goal isn't transferring to Penn State; it's finding a larger community that you can contribute to.

Identifying your issues is a task that you will be forced to do throughout your entire life. The reality is that things are not always as they may seem. Appearance deceives many, which is why it is vital that you are open-minded and therefore have the ability to see and value ALL aspects of a given situation.

In life, nothing goes wrong. When things don't meet expectation let go of how you think things should be. It's all a matter of not having an attachment to any fixed outcome.

Likewise, positive thoughts are not enough. You must accompany your mindset with feeling and action to make a true difference.

I wouldn't have been able to realize any of this had I thought I didn't love my dream school.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
