14 Things That Are So Much Better Than Having A Night Class

I would much rather spend my time doing something more productive than daydreaming in a class.

Sometimes the joys, or sorrows, of college is having a night class. Out of my now eight semesters, Only three haven’t had night classes. Depending on the class, I haven’t minded the fact that it’s been at night, but if I had had the option to take an earlier one, I would have made it work in my schedule.

Some of my night classes have been an hour and a half, whereas my longest class has been just shy of three hours. For all of the professors who have ever thought that I had nothing better to do with those three hours, well, you’re mostly right, but in the times I’ve daydreamt in class, I’ve thought up exactly what I would rather do with my time.

1. Take a bath.

What isn’t relaxing about a warm bath, complete with a bath bomb and a glass of wine?

2. Go for a walk.

It may be too cold for it now, but when the weather is good, a nice walk around campus can really clear your mind.

3. Do homework for my other classes.

Although I’m mostly a night owl, work and school make me a morning person. The later I stay up with homework, the less sleep I get at night.

4. Go to bed at a decent time.

It never fails. I always end up staying awake until well past midnight when I have a night class the same night.

5. Write more Odyssey articles.

I always end up procrastinating these every week, but if I didn’t have my night class, I would have time to do them ahead of time.

6. Watch Netflix.

Because even though I am between series right now, I can still always find something worth watching. Yes, I am taking suggestions for my next series.

7. Hang out with friends.

Since it is my last semester in college, I would love to have more time to spend with my friends. We don’t know where we will end up after college, so while we are still close, I want to take advantage of it.

8. Take up a new hobby.

I have recently come to the realization that I don’t really do anything for fun when I am bored. I literally only watch Netflix. Having extra time in the evening would allow me to find something productive to do with myself.

9. Volunteer at a local animal shelter.

Although the Humane Society usually closes after normal business hours, that doesn’t mean there aren’t dogs to walk or cats to entertain in foster homes. I could lend a helping hand to these folks that have opened their homes to furry friends!

10. Reorganize my bedroom.

I would love to be able to have the time to focus my energy on reorganizing my room so that I can figure out what I would like to keep and what I could donate. I usually hurry through this at the end of the year when I move out, but having the time now would certainly make moving less stressful.

11. Work on writing my books.

I am studying creative writing, and school has been the only thing standing in my way of actually writing what I want to. Don’t get me wrong, I love writing for class and usually enjoy the topics, but they aren’t exactly New York Times Bestseller List.

12. Cook more often.

I tend to always eat meals that only require a short time to make, such as grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, or pizza rolls. I would much rather have the time to cook a real meal for myself.

13. Startup knitting again.

I’ve only ever finished knitting one thing, so if I could spend more time practicing it, I could likely get really good!

14. Sit and reminisce about the days when I had a night class.

One day, I will have free evenings, likely until I have kids of my own someday, and I cannot wait to have that sort of free time to try new things. Until those days come, I will be stuck in class for my evenings, still daydreaming about all those lucky ones that have their evenings free!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
