Vacation: the time of year you get to live outside you're little world. If you're headed to the mountains or to a tropical beach, here's some things to remember.
1. Don't pack the night before.
Save yourself the anxieties of thinking you forgot something. By staying organized you will be sure to 1. not forget anything, and 2. prevent overpacking.
2. Sleep.
The night before your big vacay can be exciting. You know what isn't exciting? Being tired and grumpy for the entire journey. Do yourself and those with you a favor and good some rest.
3. Set more than one alarm.
Ain't nobody trying to run around like the family in "Home Alone." Set a few alarms so you can stay on schedule.
4. Eat breakfast.
Hangry is not happy. Food will keep you go so eat up!
5. Lock up the house and check it twice.
Avoid panicking on a beach in North Carolina on whether or not you locked the front door.
6. If you're flying, pack you carry on intelligently.
Your carry on bag will be a game changer, if you pack it right. Bring entertainment, snacks, medicine, gum (for when your ears pop) and a neck pillow to help you snooze in the air.
7. If you're driving, have snacks handy.
The same goes for driving. Have some snacks or means or entertainment close by so you can enjoy your ride with ease.
8. Get your mind on where it needs to be.
It is very difficult to not think about all your responsibilities, but if there's a time to forget them it's now.
9. Actually unpack your bag when you arrive.
Treat this new place as your home. Unpacking will make you really feel in tune with where you are. This will also make outfit decisions much easier.
10. Have a drink.
You made it there safe. You're unpacked and you're settled in. Now it's time to relax. Grab a local crafted beer from the mountain brewery or a fruity cocktail at the tiki bar and drink up! It's officially vacation time.
11. Take pictures, but don't be obnoxious.
Of course you want to remember everything you see, but what makes vacation so special is being present and using your memory to reminisce. So take one picture of the place you're staying, not 92. And to be honest, no one cares about the food you're eating.
12. Put the electronics away.
Excuse me, you are on a beach. Why do you need too look at your smartphone with that kind of view? You don't. Put it down and take it all in.
13. Have fun. Be adventurous.
This opportunity may not come again. Go to local hole in the wall eateries, going hiking, learn about the culture and embrace your surroundings.
If it's a weekend or a month long excursion, vacation is only here for so long. Forget your troubles! This is what real living should be like. Simple, happy and free!
