Tick… tick… tick…
In the next five minutes, nearly eight people will lose their life to suicide worldwide.
According to Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE.org), every 13 minutes someone in the US claims their life. In the next 24 hours, approximately 105 Americans will commit suicide.
With the new Netflix show, “13 Reasons Why" the topic of suicide has come to light. However, many feel as if the show and the book (that was published in 2007) glorifies suicide. I remember reading the book six years ago after it was recommended to me by a friend. At that point in my life, I had never lost anyone to suicide, and the book had very little impact on me. When the show came out, I watched the first two episodes and had to shut off the TV. I could not watch it anymore.
I am not here to tell you whether or not you should or should not watch the show. I will not tell you whether or not to read the book. These are decisions that each person must make for themselves.
I will, however, tell you one thing. Educate yourself on the topic of suicide and mental health. Learn the signs and don't be afraid to intervene when you see something that worries you. Moreover, if it's you considering suicide, please don't let go.
I can promise you one thing if you let go now you will miss out on so many beautiful things. There are people you haven’t met yet and things you have not experienced.
Think about all those things you wanted to do growing up. If you quit now, you won’t have the opportunity to experience any of those.
Yes, I know today may feel stormy. You may feel like nothing will ever change. Or you feel like no matter what you do you'll never be able to please those certain people. It sucks, I know. I won't lie to you and say it doesn't.
However, there is hope. Let me tell you this, the bravest thing you can ever do is reach out for help. Admitting you can’t do it on your own is terrifying, I know because I’ve been there. It may leave you feeling like a failure, but you know what? You aren’t failing. Each day you choose to stay is another day that you’ve conquered your demon.
I know you may not feel significant in this world, but believe me, you are. Each time you cross paths with someone you leave an imprint on their life. Our stories are made when we meet people and experience new things. Each person life is influenced by that of many others. Your life influences all the people you’ve ever met and ever will meet.
Most importantly, remember this. Remember that there are so many people out there that love you. It may not seem like it, but I promise you it’s true. In fact, I love you. I may not know you, but I love you because your presence makes this world a better place.
So please, don’t let go. Talk to a friend, a family member, or call a hotline. Just reach out to someone, please. This world loves you and needs you.
