Don't Forget To Thank The Bad Things

Because sometimes they help us, too.

Well, America, it's that time of year. When we all post about how thankful we are for our best friend, S.O., parents, siblings, pets, and that sort of generic thing. It doesn't apply to everyone- but it happens. The problem is, in all the rush to be thankful, we forget to be thankful for some of the ugly things. So this year, don't forget to be thankful for...

1. The hardships of life

We all have rough patches and mistakes, it's part of being human. And they suck, so we try to forget them. However, the hard parts make us grow and they make us stronger. So even in the worst moments, we should be thankful.

2. That one class we hate going to.

It doesn't really matter which class- you thought of one. But hey, you're going to college. Some people never get that. So even when it's the 8am where the professor thinks you don't deserve any attendance freebies, take a second and be thankful. You're here, you're taking classes, and you're making it so far.

3. The difference in your bank account the day after bills.

We've all been there. For me, it's rent. My account goes from three number to change for a few days, and it sucks. But hey, you know what? You can afford them. Even when they put you in the negative a day or two before paychecks, you are affording them. You can put a roof over your head, and you can survive (even if it is on ramen). You're making it, kid.

4. Working holidays.

This sounds dumb, I know. But there's people out there who are going to get where I am coming from- it's Thanksgiving, and while your family is sitting down around the table, you're clocking in at work. It sucks. But you know what doesn't suck? Holiday pay and/or pay and a half.

5. To exist today.

Do you ever stop and think about how lucky you are to exist in the modern era? We have technology, vaccines, and tons of other advantages. Yeah, the world gets a little crazy. Sometimes it is hard to feel safe. But you know what? You're probably not going to die of polio and you have a computer in your pocket. I consider that a victory to be thankful for.

So as you go about giving your thanks this season, don't forget the bad things.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
