Don't End Your Life, You Have So Much To Live For

Your life is too important for you to end it.

With the recent release of the Netflix original show "13 Reasons Why," I think it is necessary to reiterate the importance of staying alive even through what might seem like the toughest parts of our lives.

I know you are hurting. I know you are in a great deal of pain. You wake up every morning feeling even weaker than you did the day before. You wonder if it's really worth it to get out of bed. Will I be able to make it through today if I can't even make it out of the house? The answer is yes.

Imagine what life would be like if one morning, you never woke up.

Your roommates would think that you just skipped class and wanted some extra time to sleep. But when they got home that night, they realized they hadn't seen or heard from you all day. They go into your room to see what you were doing while they were busy with class and work, and that is when they find you.

What would that feel like? How would you feel if you found one of your roommates lifeless in their bed? What would it feel like to call 911 and be unable to speak because you still can't comprehend the sight before your own two eyes? What would it feel like to call your roommate's parents and have to explain to them that you were the one to find their body? You would have to tell that story at least a dozen times: to the paramedics, the police, your own family and friends. You would keep repeating that you had no idea, there were no warning signs and you wish you could have stopped it from happening. It would consume your whole existence; the loss of your friend's life would drain you, and every day would be a bad day.

The way that you feel just by picturing yourself in those shoes is nowhere near the amount of pain that your friends and family would feel if you took yourself out of this life.

You might have felt like no one was ever there for you; there was a constant feeling of loneliness aching in your bones every day, every night. Maybe you felt like it was you against the world, but the hundred people at your funeral would suggest otherwise.

Now that you are gone, your mom quit her job because she can't get out of bed anymore. Your dad throws himself into his work to distract him from the reality of his life, but he cries every night before he goes to sleep. Your sister wants to drop out of high school and she stopped eating because she can't face the empty chair at the dinner table every night. Your roommate, and best friend, withdrew from college and moved back home because she couldn't walk past your bedroom door without breaking down.

Everyone still wonders why. They wonder what they could have done to save you. They're mad at themselves for not seeing how badly you were hurting. They're mad at you for not asking for help. But most importantly, they miss you every second of every day.

Your life is too important for you to end it.

One day you are going to graduate college and get your first adult job that puts you on track towards your dream career. One day you are going to meet the love of your life, you are going to get married and buy your first house. One day you are going to have children of your own to teach lessons to based off of your very own experiences. One day your kids are going to get married and have kids of their own, one day you are going to be a grandparent. None of this can happen if you take your life. Aren't you curious about who your soulmate is or what you're going to look like with grey hair?

Life is a precious gift, though it can seem like the opposite sometimes. There is so much in the world that you haven't seen yet, so much music to be heard, so many countries to be visited, so many more holidays to be celebrated. Your life is far from over.

Your life is worth so much, so please don't end it. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline if you or someone you know needs help. Don't be afraid to ask for it; we all need a shoulder to cry on sometimes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
