I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten that look. You know what look I’m talking about. That “aren’t you too big for that shirt”, and “ you really think it’s a good idea to wear that” look. I can’t tell you how many times people ask me who I’m getting dressed up or dolled up for. Honestly, I’m getting tired of hearing it. I don’t think people realize that when you wake up in the morning your first thought isn’t: “hmm, what should I wear to make society happy today?”
You wake up in the morning regretting getting a job or going to school because your bed is a nest of warmth and safety from the world outside of Netflix. If you’re like me then there are three things that get you out of bed. The first thing to get you motivated is that there is coffee or tea just waiting to be poured into a mug that looks like a small animal. The second is the reminder that if you don’t get out of bed to make it to work or class on time you won’t get money, and you need money to buy coffee and cute mugs that look like small animals. The third and final push is the revelation that you are going to get up and get dressed in something that will make you feel good.
You don’t need to wear a three-piece suit to feel like you are about to introduce a bill to Congress. Just like you don’t need to be wearing yoga pants and a stained hoodie to feel like a slacker. In fact, I feel like I am most productive wearing a cat onesie. Do you want to know the secret to living a successful and happy life? Well, I’m going to give you the answer anyway (SPOILER ALERT): loving who you are and how you look. So as long as you are comfortable wearing what you are wearing then who cares?
I’m also sick of hearing people say the ever infamous: “You look so much better without your makeup on.” Okay, stop. The next time someone says this to you remind him or her that you didn’t ask for HIS OR HER preference about YOUR face. You wear your makeup to please yourself and to make yourself feel like the Beauty Combatant that you are. So the next time someone says that god-forsaken phrase, end them with the wings of your eyeliner.
So I think I can speak on behalf of the majority of the female population when I say that we dress for ourselves. Why should we have to be trying to impress people because we decided to wear a dress or curl our hair? Why does society believe that we are trying to climb further up the never ending latter of society because we spent more time applying makeup? As if we believe that our self-worth based on our looks and measured by society. Why are we agreeing that we are “bumming it” or “slacking” because yoga pants, leggings, and sweatpants are more comfortable than jeans?
So here is the Public Service Announcement that will apply until human beings cease to exist, as we know it.
No one dresses for your opinion. So don’t voice it.
