Back to school shopping is upon us, so, it's time to rejoice! But where should a starving college student shop? Okay, maybe not starving, so let's start out this new school year with some savings because it couldn't hurt! So, where should you be spending your hard earned cash?
1. Ikea
This might be kinda obvious, but seriously some of the best deals can be found in this Disney like furniture store. From kitchen utensils starting at 75 cents (yes, 75 cents!) to ultra soft down comforters starting at $50 (as opposed to $80 from Target), this is the place for all your dorm/apartment needs. Not to mention all the inspiration you can draw from their room displays. If you do plan on visiting I suggest you sign up to be a part of their family so you can get the lowest prices. It's easy, free, and found inconveniently placed kiosks at the entrance.
2. Walmart
Again, this is another obvious choice, but Walmart has rightfully earned its spot on this list. They have such low pricing on all of their back to school items it might just convince you to go pick up your supplies early to avoid the chaotic tax free weekend. Let's face it, some moms just get WAY too into tax free weekend and I'd like to avoid that as much as possible! But aside from those Walmart has some really great deals, like backpacks starting at $10 (Which I took advantage of!) and folders starting at 50 cents.
3. Target
So, you've gotten your dorm/apartment decor and some needed school supplies. Time to hit up Target next! I personally love Target since they basically have everything. Their clothes are reasonably priced and will last for the next few years, plus they always have some type of sale going on. Same goes for makeup, school supplies, electronics, etc. You basically go to Target to get the rest of your school shopping list done. Target also has a money saving app called Cartwheel. This is a MUST for every college kid. It brings up not only sales, but special secret discounts you can only find on the app. It even has a back to school/college section. Simply add the sale to your cart, scan the bar code on your phone at the checkout, and watch the savings!
4. Online Shopping
Not always the first place to look, online stores have huge back to school sales. BOGOs, 20% off, and more can be found as well as student discounts for websites like amazon. This also saves gas and travel time since you can shop online anywhere. And even if you find something you might want later, just save it to your cart until you're ready to come back for it! Stores also usually have free shipping once you spend a certain amount which let's face it, you probably will.
5. Bed, Bath, and Beyond
This place was basically my diamond in the rough. Not only did I find an awesome shower caddy, but I found school themed reusable cups. Okay, but what's so special about that you ask. They were only $20. Yes, $20; not a whopping $40 at your on campus bookstore. This just goes to show wanting to have some school pride doesn't have to break the bank.
6. Goodwill
Again, let's not break the bank before we even step foot onto a campus. Goodwill is the one of the best places to go to get clothes, especially if you're a student. I recently visited one of my local Goodwill and found a USF shirt in perfect condition. Keep in mind I live about an hour and a half from USF, so finding the shirt was a pleasant surprise. Hidden gems like this are all over thrift stores. And once you find them, you can get even more bang for your buck by using your student discount which is good for 10% off at any Goodwill location.
