I don’t like to talk about politics during an election. And it’s not because I’m uniformed, either. Alright, it’s partly due to that, but with all the candidates posturing on the campaign trail, nobody can actually say they’re really informed.
But since I don’t live in a vacuum, and despite my best efforts, I can’t avoid every election conversation. The funny thing about these joyous discussions is that it doesn’t matter what direction the conversation takes, it always ends with, "Who are you voting for?"
Which really means, "Are you a Democrat or a Republican? I really only have two options, and there’s a 50/50 chance the conversation will still be civil. Or I can go with the wild card and claim Independent, which causes looks that make me think I’m waving around a plastic wand while wearing a tinfoil cowboy hat. Talking about the election is like going out of my way to get water boarded. Like paying for my eyelids to get peeled off with tweezers.
No, I don’t like talking about the election, but I do have something to say about Donald Trump. When I watch him in a debate or on an interview I don’t seem him as someone who’s running for president. It’s not because he isn’t a politician, either, that’s the only thing about him that I actually like. But with all his money, his posturing, and his inflammatory statements about the people who don’t belong in the United States, he reminds me of a villain from a comic book. You know, one whose goal is to conquer this weak planet so they "can make it great again."
I don’t understand how Donald Trump can seriously be looked at as the future President of the United States. The possible leader of the product of immigration and integration. The country where you’re supposed to be judged by your character alone.
History has told us that that hasn’t always been the case, but I think we’re getting better. That’s what’s so confusing about the whole Trump thing. Despite all of our technology, it seems our society regressed to some archaic Dark Ages. A time where some people want a president that believes we should make the United States into some fortress where nobody can get in, unless they want to experience boiled tar being dumped on them at the gate, of course.
A president that will send refugees back to their war infested homeland because “Our country has tremendous problems. We can't have another problem." I can’t argue that our country doesn't have problems, but does that mean we can’t help our fellow humans in an actual time of need? Is that the kind of thinking we want our next president to be doing? No, didn't think so.
I understand that he’s a business man. I really do get that. That seems to be the allure of him, but there’s more to being the president than making money. Trump would have to work with other allies, but what does it say about him that the British Parliament proposed to ban him from setting foot in the building? He wouldn’t even be able to work with the United States' biggest ally if the proposal went through. Since he's so prone to throw insults at every meeting, he could result in World War III.
No, I don’t like talking about the election. Regardless, nothing good can happen out of Donald Trump being president. There’s been talk of a mass exodus if he’s elected. I don’t see that happening. I think something much worse will happen. So, in three easy words: Just please don't.
