Donald Trump, with a net worth of $4 billion, made quite the statement during a press release. Currently, Trump is the runner-up for the Republican choice of presidential candidate behind Jeb Bush in GOP polling. With his strong economic background many feel as if he has the necessary skills to finally bring our country out of debt. However, the most recent and controversial statement that Trump has made is in regards to illegal immigrants coming up from Mexico.
In his 2016 Presidential candidacy speech Trump listed several changes that would need to be made in order to fix the economy of this nation. He argued that illegal immigrants are a main factor in destroying the economy. Trump is not alone in his opinion on this. For years there have been debates over strengthening our country’s borders in order to inspire nationalism. However, Trump may have gone too far this time.
Trump made a very controversial claim about Mexicans crossing our border. He stated, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” He continued on to claim that Mexico is not our only problem.
Following this speech Trump lost numerous partnerships including Macy’s and NBC Universal. In fact, NBC refused to air Trump’s Miss USA pageant (and Mexico has refused to participate in his Miss Universe pageant), and they are already looking for a new host for “The Celebrity Apprentice.” Trump reacted by threatening to sue NBC. In fact, he did sue Univision, the Spanish network that airs his pageant. He argues that these networks signed a contract and are legally obligated to show his programming.
Trump is not worried about his place in the polls. In fact, he believes that his stance on immigration will help him gain votes. Even with the backlash from Latino voters, it does seem that Trump is surging ahead in the polls. Many admire him for his frankness and believe that he will be resilient in his platform and ideas on how to improve the United States. Trump is certainly not a nationwide favorite for a place in office, but he seems to be holding his own, and it will be interesting to see how he ends up as the race for presidency continues.
