Let me just start by saying that when Donald Trump announced he was running for president, I seriously thought it was a joke. I thought he would drop out at some point. As time passed, it wasn't funny anymore, and now a lot of people are freaked out because if he keeps winning these Republican primaries, he actually might be the Republican nominee for the next president of the United States, and that's scary. What's even more scary is some people actually believe he is going to "Make America Great Again".
Before I get to the point of this article, let me fill you in with 3 basic things he represents. I'm including videos at the bottom, in case his ideas don't seem legit to you.
1. His View on Muslims:
In an interview on The Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon, he said: "We have to figure out what's going on in this country and we don't know. Were not getting any help because other people know that these people are going to do something and they never get reported. So we say, we have to figure it out." Here he's saying he believes there should be surveillance on muslims in the United States. He says they should be tracked by law enforcement. Basically, he's blaming all the muslim population in America and punishing all of them because of terrorism acts that happened. He does not want them admitted to the US at all. If that isn't terrifying, I don't know what is.
2. The Wall Between Mexico and the US
In case you didn't hear, he's planning on building a wall between the United States and Mexico. He said the majority of Mexicans are rapists and criminals and the Mexican government purposely sends criminals to the US. I quote him when he said: "Sadly, the overwhelming amount of violent crime in our major cities is committed by blacks and hispanics-a tough subject-must be discussed." So he's consistently blaming minority populations for everything going wrong in the US. Oh, and he wants MEXICO to pay for this wall themselves by the way. That blatant racism is absolutely despicable. It's 2016 that deep seeded hateful racism should not be tolerated, let alone supported.
3. Illegal Immigration
This is probably the one that's most talked about. He wants every single illegal undocumented immigrant out of the US. He's planning on deporting about 11 million people, whether they have somewhere else to go or not (who do the jobs that nobody in the US wants to do, btw). It's ironic, because Trump employs undocumented immigrants, and they work for him. So he's kicking out his own workers too. Not to mention the economy would go even more downhill if he did this. He plans to end birthright citizenship, and does not support creating new paths to citizenships for all undocumented workers. Also, he said that Bush doesn't have a problem with immigrants because his wife is Mexican. This xenophobia is something that we should really reflect on.
So, now that you know some of the many things this man is promoting, I'm here to write about something that happened recently with the governor of New Jersey. Chris Christie endorsed Donald Trump for president of the United States, and that gave him a profile boost for his campaign.
Christie said: "The best person to beat Hillary Clinton in November on that stage last night is undoubtedly Donald Trump." I continue quoting: "Donald Trump is someone who when he makes a promise, he keeps it. I’ve experienced that over my friendship with him, and what the American people and our allies around the world are going to understand is that Donald Trump is someone who keeps his word, and that means America will keep its word again."
Yes, presidential candidates aren't always honest and keep their word. Everybody knows that. Also, some things they propose may never come to fruition because of congress. Trump is proposing all of this garbage and he's definitely going to go through with it if he gets a chance. But, while its evident that Trump is going to keep his word, that doesn't mean that what he's doing is right. In fact what he's proposing is horrifying.
You can promise you are going to do something and do it, but that doesn't make you a good person if what you promised to do was irrational and hazardous.
You promise to deport people who have nowhere else to go and build a 55-foot wall to prevent all these "criminals and rapists" from entering your country. You can also promise to increase taxes even for people who make less than $25,000 a year, but that doesn't mean anything. What you promised to do doesn't benefit anybody except racist xenophobic people who actually believe all of these things Trump is saying.
The people who support Trump represent a pitiful portion of our country. They represent a people who is so overwhelmed with hate and ignorance that they fail to remember the dark parts of our past. Did we so quickly forget the horrific issue of slavery? Did we forget about the period in history where Irish immigrants were not admitted to the United States, although they were dying of starvation in Ireland? Did we forget about McCarthyism and the innocent citizens that were blacklisted? Did we forget about Japanese internment camps?
How anybody could support a candidate like this and endorse them is beyond me, and in my opinion, Christie must have definitely been promised something in return for endorsing this guy.
Happy election year everyone.
