Sadly, in today's society, more people will recognize the name "Trump" than the names of people like Malala Yousafazi. If you had to Google that name, then I would first like to thank you for educating yourself a little more on this day, and, secondly, shame on you for not already knowing. Yes, we all know and recognize the name Trump; whether it’s for Donald Trump’s business ventures, the popular show in which he degraded others, or his new presidential candidacy, we all have our own opinions of him.
But, before jumping aboard the train towards destination "Make America Great Again," here are a few friendly reminders one should spend some time considering. It is no secret that Donald Trump is leading the polls across the nation, but my question is: why? With the Republican Party being notorious for its conservative views based on Christianity, it is hard to understand how people who believe that God makes no mistakes could stand behind a man who openly mocked a disabled man on national television. My answer: money. Money is what makes the world go round, and with a nation terrified by a debt in the trillions, it is easy to look upon Donald Trump as an answer to all of these problems. His wealth and "successful" career as a business mogul projects him in a fairly good light when considering the candidate with the most fiscal knowledge. But, might I remind you that he did not acquire this wealth, he was born into it.
We all know the famous Trump quote about his father giving him a "small loan" of a million dollars, and, while social media and other platforms have picked up steam and success in his humiliation, it is also extremely telling of his ability to represent a nation. Part of the humor comes from the fact that a huge percentage of the country in no way finds a million dollars small. How can a man born into a family that was already extremely wealthy, and who has never not been so, be expected to understand and sympathize to any population of the United States other than the upper class and highest two percent?
He is known as a business mogul and entrepreneur, but that leaves little in explaining how he will be able to advance the country in anything non-fiscal. For example, foreign and domestic policies. When your only mechanism to combat foreign strife is building a wall or banning anyone with brown skin, how could you be considered someone with enough knowledge to represent one of the most diverse countries in the world?
In addition to his blatant disregard for minorities, although they become the majority of U.S. citizens each day, is his view on women. Donald Trump is attributed to some of the most offensive and downright degrading comments regarding women on national television. He has stated that the best position for women is on their knees. He has even stated that as far as women he would deem worthy of holy matrimony, his daughter is at the top of the list. I don't know about you, but incestuous behavior is not very high up on my list of qualities I find redeemable in a presidential candidate. If that's how he plans to "make America great again," I will gladly see my way out of this country and safely behind the other side of the "wall" he is so determined will definitely happen.
Aside from the fact that he has absolutely no idea how to represent the needs of our nation, even if he did, he has no clue how to fix our problems. With debates and campaigns and slogans, he has spoken little to none on any policies he would implement if he were to become president. With no political experience in holding office and no political stance aside from his plot to build a wall and somehow make Mexico pay for it, forgive me, but I am struggling to see just how Trump intends to "advance" our nation.
Of all the ignorance and general idiocy that is the Trump campaign, the worst part by far is that fact that people are listening. More and more people are coming forward and voicing their opinions and outrage toward the "issues" (I use this term very loosely) that they believe America is facing. If I could thank Donald Trump for anything, it would be the final proof needed to exemplify that racism and misogyny are still very much alive and well. He disrespects our own nation by capitalizing on the willingness of his followers. He's taken things to the extreme, but his recent urging of his audience members to raise a hand and pledge to him that they will increase torture laws is not only barbaric and tyrannical, but simply treasonous.
If this is your idea of a "greater" America, we must have different definitions of the term "great."
