For many, it's just a day to remind you of how single you are. Then, there are some people who care too much about the "holiday" and go all out giving gifts or expecting them. But does Valentine's Day really matter? Why should we care about getting heart candies, chocolates, balloons, and flowers?
To me, this is just another day that was made for stores and restaurants to make more money. This isn't a real holiday that we should be celebrating. It's pretty much just a day of love. And I'm not saying this because I'm a lonely single. I am dating someone, but I still think that the day is pointless. I do not expect my boyfriend to go out and buy me a ton of things and spend a crazy amount of money on me for dinner. So why do we need another day to get gifts and go see a movie/go to dinner? That's what an anniversary is for. I don't care if I get a teddy bear, but I don't mind the chocolates!
When we are in school, the school will usually do something like balloons or roses, because they know that it's a good way to get some money from the people who care about buying those kinds of things for the people they love. I personally think that the whole thing is a popularity contest, and that it's pretty stupid. I mean I'm sure that there are plenty of kids who end up going home sad or upset because they didn't get a balloon or a rose. They might not have gotten one for many reasons, but it never feels good to see everyone around you getting one. I'll be honest with you, I loved getting a balloon on Valentine's Day from my boyfriend and my parents. I thought they were doing it because they loved me. Well, no, they are doing it because society says they should to show that they care.
I get that many women like this day because they are able to get gifts that they want, or because their loved one will take them out. That's all fine, but I just think that it's pointless, because if you need an excuse to buy those little things, or to take your partner out, then you need to rethink things. This isn't even a real holiday. We need to stop treating this like it's a super special day, because in all honesty it's not. It's just another day that was created so companies will be able to make more money.
So, I don't think that Valentine's Day matters. I think that it's just a glorified holiday that is just made to make some people feel worse about themselves sometimes because of the fact that they don't have anyone to spend the holiday with. Then there are the other people who just put too much effort into it, or that expect way too much because it's a "women's" holiday.
