The Diversity In My Reading Pile

It's a brand new year! We should explore our knowledge in books.

The Diversity In My Reading Pile
Hipster

Every year, I want to read more to expand my knowledge of words and stories but I never have time to lie down and read. I make a reading list of new books to read from sources from Tumblr, Goodreads, Barnes & Noble or recommend/Booktubers but it is always the same genre that I am comfortable in. In my English class, my teacher mentioned novels that every reader has read but I haven't brought up new things to read about. I do want to read more diversely. I have found that if you limit yourself to one particular genre, you are missing out on other books that enhance your reading experience. I already have some books planned for this year, but of course, I want to read as many as I possibly can in the next ten months.

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail By Cheryl Strayed

Wild is about her own memoir of the 1,100 mile solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trial, from the Mojave Desert and hiking through California & Oregon to the Bridge of the Gods into Washington and talks about why she had done this eventful walk.

My English teacher recommended my entire class to read this book even though it was mostly at me to read it because I am currently a Creative Writing Major.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Unbroken is about the life story of Louie Zamperini, an Olympic runner and military aviator in World War II. He was lost at sea and years of horrific abuse as a prisoner of war in Japan.

My English teacher also recommended this novel to my class and to myself to expand our reading and writing skills as students.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Six of Crows is about Ketterdam, which is a hub for the internal trade, where anything can be for the right price and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. He is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams.

I have heard of this book series but I never read anything worth a mental thinking of solving something so unique. Also I really love the cover because it reminds me of a poem by Edgar Allen Poe.

The Iron Trial by Cassandra Clare

The Iron Trial is about Callum Hunt who wants to fail the Iron Trial. His father warns him to stay away from magic. If he succeeds at the Iron Trial and is admitted into the Magisterium, he is sure that only bad things can happen for him.

I really loved Cassandra Clare's works because it brings a lot of imagination and creative ways into her novels to be more realistic.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is about two boys named Aristotle and Dante: one who is an angry teen with a brother in prison and another one who is a know-it-all with a unusual way of looking at the world. When theymeet for the first time and spend more time together, they start to realize that they share a special friendship that would change their lives and a lifetime. It is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Fangirl is about the main character named Cath who writes fan fiction about the Simon Snow Series and her twin sister, Wren, started the fascination from when they were just kids, which helped when their own mother left. Originally, Cath was supposed to roommates with her twin sister but life started going a different route for Cath and ends up completely outside of her comfort zone. She has to choose to leave being a Simon Snow fan or move more forward in her life without having to hold onto Wren's hand.

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova

Labyrinth Lost is about the main character named El, a seventeen year old, who has inherited an ancient and deadly power, loses control of it and becomes a target of the secret organization named the Order. As she is drawn deeper into the conflict, the only way to find the truth is to find it on her own, and the line between friend and foe becomes dangerously blurred.

Made You Up by Francesca Zappia

Made You Up is about Alex who deals with her schizophrenia, a daily battle to figure out the difference between reality, with her little sister as her only ally. She is determined to stay sane long enough to get into the college she wants to get into. She runs into this guy named Miles, who experiences his college life like a normal guy, who is completely different from Alex. She is used to being crazy and not prepared for being normal.

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

The Star-Touched Queen is about the main character named Maya, who is cursed, with a horoscope that promises a marriage of death and destruction. Her father arranges a wedding of political convenience to quite down the rebellions. She becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. She is not used to the roles in becoming a queen and a wife, experiences her own voice and power. As a wife to Amar, she finds compassion, protection and desire. But she has to unlock the secrets in the new environment. With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most, including herself.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
