The prolonged silence in Disney's princess collection has finally made an echoing noise among the media this past week. On June 12, Walt Disney Animated Studios released it's first trailer for one of the most highly anticipated films since Frozen's 2013 debut. This Thanksgiving we get to watch the story of a not-so-traditional princess: Moana Waialiki, the first Polynesian Disney Princess.
Moana, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, is a princess originating from the ancient Oceania islands in the South Pacific. While searching for a legendary island, she joins forces with the famous Polynesian demigod Maui -- who is voiced by Dwayne Johnson, I might add -- and together they navigate an epic adventure of cultural folklore and personal identity.
Disney is impressively breaking racial and social barriers by evolving it's cabinet of princesses to a more worldly scope. Instead of fixating on finding love, Moana is pursuing a solution to save her people. Talk about girl empowerment, right?
But a demigod doesn't hurt to have along the way.
According to the legend of Maui, the true hero and chief of the Polynesian people once created the Hawaiian islands by convincing his brothers to take him fishing, where he managed to pull the ocean floor with his hook. Sounds like a good catch right? But it doesn't stop there. Apparently Maui once lifted the sky. The people of Earth were oppressed by a low sky line until the demigod and his father raised it with impressive strength, allowing the mankind to live properly.
Moana's story is going to be an important one that will echo a emotional connection with viewers. A princess trying to preserve the culture she loves is an heroic story we can all relate and look forward to. Can I pre-order tickets yet?
