Disco Up Your Detox

Your body is your party.

While you gorge toxins this week, consider taking a break to detox. Your body will thank you for the break from carcinogens and parabens.

1. Drink one gallon of water.

Drinking one gallon of water for each day you detox is a for sure way to flush your body out, and quickly, too. Adding a few green tea bags, mint and lemon to the gallon will also give your metabolism an added kick, helping to aggressively detox and even shed unwanted pounds. The water will keep you hydrated, ensuring your overall body to look and be much healthier.

2. Don't eat processed foods.

Eating during detoxing can be tricky. There is no detoxing occurring if, through the process, you continuously add or use chemicals with the regime. Processed foods include all foods that are solely made from "refined ingredients" that are then chemically processed. Processed foods and beverages are the biggest sources of added sugar (and HFCS) in the diet. Sugar is very unhealthy and can have serious adverse effects on metabolism when consumed in excess (Authority Nutrition). The sugar and other additives found in these products also cause many people to actually gain addiction, making overeating a must. Stick to an organic, GMO-free and plant-based diet while detoxing for maximum results.

3. Stop all smoking.

Of any kind, yes, even reefer. Obviously there are a variety of substances and ways to smoke. However, there is one common characteristic they all share: carbon monoxide. Whenever anything is burned, it releases carbon monoxide, meaning whatever you burn and then inhale will have some sort of negative impact on your lungs, again, some far worse than others. By removing chemicals through inhalants, your blood circulation strengthens, helping to detox your full body.

4. Meditate.

Meditation allows for mental clarity, relaxation and mental detox. Consider the thoughts you have daily. Negative thoughts and mindsets can actually affect the chemistry of an individual. "Meditation quiets the 'monkey mind,' the constant, un-directed thinking that often brings anxiety, worry and distraction into our everyday lives. Even taking five minutes to practice meditation to detox mind can bring us back into the present moment, encourage better decision making, and allow us to truly experience our lives to the fullest" (Junger, M.D). 5. Fasting from food.

Fasting from food is a great way to clean and purify your body. The misleading concept that we need to eat daily is simply false. I want to be clear that I am, in fact, advocating for people who live sedentary lifestyles to put your food down for at least 12 hours (unless you have a medical condition). Fasting has often shown to improve heart health, blood circulation and can help reboot a healthy diet when implemented correctly. "When researchers looked at the habits of 200 men and women, they found that those who fasted once a month were 58 percent less likely to have heart disease than those who didn’t (after they controlled for factors such as age, smoking status, and high blood pressure") (Everyday Health). Fasting is not a way to replace a healthy diet and should not be used as a weight loss tool.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
