The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is sure to be a hit this year, with models Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid walking the runway alongside long time angels Candice Swanepoel and Alessandra Ambrósio. With the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show premiering on December 8th, I think it is important to review the important exchange that occurred between model Magdalena Frackowiak and a TMZ reporter. There was a lot of press given to this interaction, when the reporter asked Magdalena what food she was looking forward to eating most following the conclusion of the show. Her response was the following:
"What? No guys, not with these kinds of questions, this is stupid! Ask more smart questions, not eating after the show. You make me look like an idiot, It seems like I'm starving myself and I can't wait for the show to end so I can eat."
This interview is a significant one, that deserves a lot of attention and discussion. Other models in the show were asked the same question and responded gladly with the expected responses: pizza, ice cream and chocolate. Personally, I believe that Magdalena kind of mis-interpreted the question and its context. She assumed the question was being asked under the assumption that she hadn't eaten leading up to the show. In my interpretation, this question was asked in the context of what cheat meal she would indulge in after all of her hard work and dedication to working on bettering her body.
Anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders are no joke, and, given their prevalence within the modeling industry, Magdalena was right to defend models against those who think the disorders are a joke. Yet, I do not believe this was the intention of the reporter. It is known that these models work out non-stop and eat healthy meals in preparation for this fashion show. Ever since the launch of the Victoria's Secret Sports clothing line, Victoria's Secret has launched a series of videos on Youtube on how to "Train like an Angel". It shows the techniques of various models on how they achieve and maintain their bodies with their favorite workouts. Having any knowledge of these models, the reporter would have been aware of these workouts.
With this background information, it is hard for me to believe that the TMZ reporter intended to imply Magdalena was anorexic, starving herself leading up to the show. Frankly, I think it was just a habit for Frackowiak to assume people think she, along with most models, have an eating disorder just because they are skinny. Magdalena's attempt to take out this "sexist" reporter was un-called for, though it is understandable.
