On Tuesday, May 23rd of 2017, Sir Roger Moore, aka James Bond died in Switzerland with his family by his side. Moore was 89.
He had a brief, but brave battle with cancer and cancer won yet another soul. However, his family stated, "The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone."
Sir Roger Moore first took the role of James Bond following Sean Connery in 1973 with the movie, "Live and Let Die." His final bow as James Bond was in 1985 in the movie, "A View to Kill." Moore was the longest serving Bond in the film's series, taking on the role for 12 years.
Moore began his acting career in 1945, starring in the film, "Caesar and Cleopatra." However, at the age of 18, he paused his career as an actor to join the military. He was stationed in Germany for three years before he returned to London and his acting.
After Moore retired from the 007 franchise, he released several books about the experience, including a journal/diary he kept while shooting the movie(s).
While he is known for playing Bond, he was criticized as being the worst Bond, and even said so in an interview with Telegraph in 2008. People claim he wasn't serious enough with his role, was too funny. Despite some people thinking this, others loved his work as 007.
After retiring from being Bond, he then went on to star in other movies including, "Bullseye!" and "Spice World." But Moore wanted to do more in life.
In 1991, he became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, which was one of his life's passions. For his humanitarian work, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth ll in 2003.
We will mourn the loss of such a great man, but we will not let all his good go to waste. Others will carry on the messages he was trying to send, such as stopping animal abuse.
Thank you, Sir Roger Moore, for everything you have done. You will be missed.
