Dear Thirteen-Year-Old Me,
I know what you’re feeling right now. I know you're feeling sad, alone and excluded. I bet you have yourself locked in your bedroom right now, wishing you could just disappear. I need you to listen to me. I’m writing to tell you that your life is about to be full of adventure, love, and so many great memories that will last a lifetime if you just give yourself the chance to experience them.
I know those girls at school can be mean. Don’t let that girl in your science class get away with calling you those names. Words like “fat” and “stupid” are hurtful, I know, but you are so much more than that. Those girls are just insecure and uncomfortable with themselves. You’re a young, beautiful soul, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Never stop playing the piano. You’re so good at it, so don’t let your talents go to waste. Music will always be there for you, no matter what. Pianists like Chopin and Joplin will soon become your best friends, and bands like Iron & Wine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paper Kites, Mumford and Sons and John Mayer will win over your heart in no time. Don’t ever walk away from music because someday it’s going to inspire you to create and do some pretty great things. Music can work wonders and it will for you.
To whoever guy that hurts you in high school, don’t believe a word they say. You’ll learn to be independent and strong on your own until you meet someone that loves and respects you for the wonderful person you are. Until then, don’t stop believing in love. You will find it someday, and when you do, be patient. Love is a natural, gradual process. Don’t rush into it, especially at the age you're at right now.
Work hard in school. I know some classes can be difficult, but you’re smarter than you think. Life isn’t about shortcuts, so challenge yourself. High school won’t always be your favorite place to be, but I’m telling you right now, you WILL graduate. It’s going to feel so good when you do. Four years will go by fast, so don’t hurry yourself.
While we’re on the subject of school, please take the time to thank Ryan Schey for being the courageous, inspiring teacher that he is. I know you don’t know who that is now, but you’ll soon realize that some teachers can really have a huge impact on your life. Ryan Schey changed my whole outlook on education and success, so make sure to thank him for that.
This next one is very important. Friends will come and go. Even if you think someone will continue to be your friend after many years, don’t hold your expectations too high. High school can change people, and sometimes that means growing apart from those you thought you would always be close with. When that happens, don’t let it hurt you. You’re going to continue to meet some amazing people if you just keep your mind open.
I know anxiety sucks, but I don’t doubt that you can get through it. Whenever you feel defeated or like the world has claimed its victory against you, remember this letter. The world is NOT against you. The world is on your side. Never, ever give up. Your life is precious, and the opportunities that are out there waiting for you are precious. Don’t forget that.
I can’t express this one enough. Your family loves you. Even when you fight with them or disappoint them, they love you. As you grow up, you’ll start to appreciate them more and more, and your relationship with them will be crucial as you start growing up and becoming an adult.
And lastly, learn to enjoy the little things that life hands you. You’re in for an adventure. Although it will be difficult at times, don’t ever forget those moments that just make you smile and appreciate the world and the beauty that surrounds it. Don’t forget the people that inspire you and feed you remarkable words that you’ll carry with you for the rest of your life. Don’t forget the sound of dad’s voice cheering for you at every cross country meet. He’s there for you and is proud of you. Let him be loud and ecstatic because not everyone’s dad is out there doing the same thing. Finally, don’t forget about me. I’m here to tell you that life gets better. I promise.
Yours truly,
Future Me.
