Dear My Long Distance Best Friend,
Let me start off with one of my favorite quotes from the movie we all love, "The Notebook," because Nicholas Sparks said it best. “So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. And we’re going to have to work at it every day, but I want to do that because I want you.”
It’s not easy having to do college without you. There are nights when I just want to hug you because I’m too stressed to handle life and you’re the one who calms me down. There are nights I need to hear your jokes and your voice because you know exactly how to cheer me up when I’m in a bad mood. There are things I go through and you’re one of the only people who knows my past, given you’ve been through things with me and have heard me talk endlessly about these things in my life before. Sometimes you know my heart and who I am better than I know myself, and with you so far away, it’s hard. Of course I’ve met some wonderful and true friends here, all of whom I’m extremely grateful for and love deeply. However, there’s something about a friendship built over time and built during those awkward middle school/high school years that just makes it different. I just wish I got to go through college with you.
Not only is it hard not having you by my side, but it’s also hard on our friendship sometimes. I’m not going to lie, it’s hard knowing that other people get to make so many amazing memories with you and get to call you their “best friend.” They get to go out on late night food runs, give you that hug when you’re feeling down, be the ones to cheer you up and have those deep talks with you. Sharing my best friend is hard, but it’s inevitable because let’s face it: you’re an amazing friend, so it would be impossible to try and keep you to myself.
I guess I just want to let you know that this long distance thing is more difficult than I thought. Of course we still tag each other in best friend posts like these and text about our daily struggles and Snapchat each other pictures of things that remind us of each other, but we also have nights when we are heartbroken that we can’t do college together. We have nights when we wish we could’ve just gone to the same university so that we’d be together and have each other close by whenever life does get hard. It is difficult, but it is so worth it.
While it sucks, it’s also reassuring. It warms my heart to know that even though we’re miles apart and have different lives with different people now, whenever we do come back together or call up each other on the phone we pick up right where we left off. It’s reassuring because I know we’re in it for the long haul, and I couldn’t ask for a better friend because knowing that you’ll be in my life no matter where our paths take us is one of the most comforting things I person could know.
So thank you, my long distance best friend, because even though we have to work at it, work at dealing with going so long without seeing each other and not being able to be by each other’s side during the highs and lows of college, we do it because we know that we truly are and always will be friends forever.
Sincerely,
The One Counting Down The Days Until We're Reunited
