“I’m not one to typically share my opinion about politics, but…. [shares political opinion]”
I think we’ve all seen this kind of post around this time of year. As Election Day draws closer (Tuesday, November 8), everyone, especially in the blog/editiorial-isphere, is scrambling to formulate their opinions. “Christians are morally obligated to vote for HIllary!... Er, no, scratch that, Trump’s policies align more with our views... No, better just write someone in…Maybe abstaining from the vote altogether is the best option… Screw it, I’m fleeing to Canada.”
I have read so many opinion pieces in the past few months and as time has gone on they have grown more and more frantic. I see valid points in a lot of them- first because people are good at writing persuasively, and also, honestly, I think both candidates have their pro’s and con’s. From this influx of opinions, all I have really gleaned is this: American is CONFUSED.
A lot of Evangelicals (a lot of Americans in general) have this mindset going into the 2016 election: that of “choosing the lesser of two evils." Trump and Clinton have the lowest favorability ratings of presidential front runners in the history of the United States. That alone should be a warning sign that something has gone horribly wrong in our political system.
Even still: we have a greater Enemy, do we not?
In my personal opinion, Hillary Clinton would make the better president. Flawed as she is, I agree more with her policies, and even moreso I strongly dislike Donald Trump as a person. But that is neither here nor there. Fact is, I’m not even old enough to vote.
The position of Chief Executive is one that should be taken very seriously, so please don’t get me wrong.
HOWEVER.
This is a phrase that some Christians need to tattoo in their minds, on their hearts, and (in some cases, just for ease of memory) on their faces:
We are not saved by a political figure. We are saved by Christ, and by Christ alone.
I tend to get really anxious about the election when I think too much about it. When I watch the political debates (and I don’t think I’m alone in this), I get incredibly stressed out, to the point where I usually just give up and leave or put my headphones in.. I mean, at this point they don’t even talk about politics at these things- well, maybe on the surface, maybe that’s where it starts, but in a matter of seconds it turns into arguing and interrupting each other. It is sickening.
The snowball starts in my brain, and pretty soon I have our country already involved in World War III or dissolved into a Panem-like society, and I think to myself “I’m not ready to be Katniss Everdeen better pack my bags and move to Australia!”
I was reading the book of Psalms tonight, and a particular passage struck me. I would like to share it with you:
“Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one. ‘Let us break their chains,’ they cry, ‘and free ourselves from slavery to God.”” (Psalm 2:1-3).
Both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton would have you believe that they have the potential to save this nation single-handedly. The Enemy would have you believe that they alone have the potential to save this nation single-handedly. That's not even how our governing system works, first of all. Second, hear what God has to say:
“But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them. Then in anger he rebukes them, terrifying them with his fierce fury. For the Lord declares, ‘I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.’” (Psalm 2:4-6).
Did you read that? The king has already been chosen. (And, no, that king does not have bright orange skin and a golden toupe.) That king is Jesus. Our king came to save us, and he remains in heaven, reigning over us to this day.
Do your civic duty and vote on November 8. Then go home and go about your life.
I will say this again- we are saved by Christ, and Christ alone. Your country, your world, will not fall to pieces after election day. You will be okay. I will be okay. We will be okay. God is in control, as always. REJOICE, because the victory is ours- not the victory of Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Socialists, or any one political candidate. We have won in Christ. Love has won.
