Day 1 Of Trying To Be Healthy As Told By Someone Who Continues To Fail

The journey has to start somewhere so start with one day.

It's been over 100 days since you've made that New Years Resolution of being healthier. Some days are better than others, but being healthy is the last thing on your mind most days. It's time to stop beating yourself up.

The first day can be the hardest, but it's not impossible.

Take it from someone who has been failing miserably. All you have to do is get through the longest day of your life: Day 1.

6:45 AM

When I first wake up, I immediately remind myself of the promise I made the day before. I said that I WOULD do better.

7:17 AM

I give myself a mini-pep talk because your girl needed to get herself out of bed and into the kitchen for an energy-boosting breakfast.

7:50 AM

After a heart-healthy and tasty peanut butter oatmeal breakfast, I start getting ready for the gym.

9:18 AM

I swear the lady behind the counter of my gym was judging me when she scanned my membership card. I take the trek from the counter to the machines wondering if she knows I haven’t been here in awhile. Do they have tally marks of how many days are missed in between each gym visit? If so, I'm in trouble.

9:25 AM

So, it’s not my first time at the gym. I’m not totally incompetent but running on a treadmill in between two perfectly in-shape human beings does not bode well for me.

10:30 AM

I power through the workout and get hopped up on endorphins mentally, but jelly legging all the way to my car is a struggle.

12:30 PM

Eating veggies for lunch because I couldn’t decide on another healthy thing I could have eaten.

2:45 PM

I was hungry 0.2 seconds after eating lunch and I'm still hungry. Now I feel miserable a couple hours later because veggies weren't enough to fill me up. It's time to start contemplating snacks and honestly, I'm so hungry, I can eat the whole refrigerator.

5:30 PM

I spent hours trying to figure out what I was having for dinner but I know I needed to grocery shop for better foods. I caved and went to buy a veggie bowl from Chipotle, which I realize isn’t all that healthy but it’s better than other fast food places and I count that as a win!

6:45 PM

My friends text me asking if I want to grab ice cream with them. It takes all the willpower I have to say ‘no.’

7:56 PM

I spend extra time on Pinterest trying to find some tasty recipes for Day 2.

9:00 PM

I had to force myself to go to sleep early because they say you need your sleep.

I made it through Day 1 of my New Years Resolution 110 days late and I survived. Not every day will be like today but if you made it through 1 you’ll make it through another.

You got this!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
