Most of us don’t realize how many items contain dairy until we can’t consume it anymore. There are just way too many delicious dairy foods and beverages that we all love and have no self-control over that contain the sugar lactose. Milk, ice cream, cheese, yogurt, mac 'n' cheese, cheesecake... the list goes on.
For those who struggle just as much as I do, here are five dairy alternatives I personally enjoy:
1. Soy Milk
The most popular milk alternative is soy milk. It’s delicious, less saturated in fat than whole milk, and high in protein! It’s also a great complement to coffee, cereal, and smoothies. Yogurt made of soy milk is tasty, too, and I would say that the taste isn't too different from normal yogurt (although the consistency is a bit thinner).
2. Almond Milk
Another popular option that’s easily accessible in grocery stores is almond milk. Almond milk is rich in vitamins and minerals, and it is low in calories since manufacturers tend to dilute it. I’m not a big fan of the taste of almond milk, so instead of adding it to drinks, I would recommend adding it to soups, sauces, and baked goods for a more subtle flavor.
3. Coconut Milk
Because coconut milk is high in fat like cow’s milk (which makes milk taste better), I would say that this is the best dairy alternative. It is also my personal favorite. It tastes great in creamy recipes like curry and thicker soup, or dessert like flan. Not only is it beneficial to your health by improving your immune system, helping prevent heart disease, and increasing weight loss, but it’s also delicious! Coconut milk yogurt and ice cream are really great replacements, as well.
4. Cashew Milk
A less popular option, it's but just as great health- and taste-wise. Cashew milk is another great way to go. What has surprised me is that vegans have substituted crème cheese with cashews to make vegan cheesecake. I’ve never tried it, but I would imagine it to be just as delectable.
5. Nutritional Yeast
You might be wondering what nutritional yeast is since it has been trending more recently. Nutritional yeast is an inactive yeast made from sugarcane and beet molasses. It can come in different forms including flakes, granules, or a powder-like form. I mentioned this ingredient because it is known to have a cheesy and nutty flavor that emulates cheese. It not only has nutritional benefits but if it can also emulate cheese without digestive discomfort, I'd say that's also a win-win!
