I've Cut Out ALL Sugar And You Should Too

Easter is over but the Easter candy is lingering. What makes that candy taste so good? No surprise here....its the sugar. But what is that sugar really doing for you?

Sugar is a silent killer. According to the USDA, the average american consumes 150 to 170 POUNDS of sugar every year. Obviously we're not just straight up eating sugar, but go take a look at your pantry and see how many items contain over 2g of sugar.

An average male should consume 35g or less of sugar a day and an average woman should consume 24g or less. How much do we typically consume without actually knowing? Anywhere from 2-3 times our daily allowance. This comes from a lot of sodas, candies, and even what you may think are "healthier options".

What does this mean for our health? While you may be exercising and eating "healthier foods", you could be consuming more sugar. When brands label their products with "fat-free" or "lite" or other jargon, they add more sugar to make the taste better. Recent studies have shown that eating the full fat foods are actually better in terms of amount of sugar in them.

Have you ever wondered why wheat bread tastes so sweet? They've added extra sugar to the bread!! So if you have the choice, choose the Ezekiel bread (it's the best choice for you)!

So what does sugar do to your body? Calorie for calorie, sugar is the worst thing to put in your body. It doesn't allow you to become full so you eat more. It's effecting your liver, your brain and your face, it's priming your body for diabetes, and you're becoming a "sugar addict".

Now, in college it is difficult to stay away from everything sugary. With dining hall options and fast-food options for cheap, leading a healthy lifestyle can be hard. But if you want to see a change in your mood, weight, or overall lifestyle, here are some things to look our for:

Salad Dressings

Sodas

Candy

Low-fat Yogurts

Tomato Soup

Sweetened Cereals

Granola/Energy Bars

Juice/Energy Drinks

Smoothies

Canned/Dried Fruit

Crackers

Pasta Sauce

There's so many more, but this is just a sample of things that we eat everyday that are overwhelming our bodies with sugar. Sugar is one of the worst things that we can consume and Americans consume more than any other country. I urge everyone to try to cut out some or all sugar from their diet. Trust me when I say that your body will thank you for it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
