We always want what we can't have, and for many people, that saying revolves around the topic of hair. Whether it's hair color, hair style, hair thickness, or if it's straight or curly, hair envy is everywhere.
As someone who grew up having curly hair, just believe me when I say: it is a struggle. You should be grateful you don't have to deal with the wrath of curls. They're beyond a pain to maintain.
Sure, curly hair has it's moments when it looks really nice. But you don't understand the work it takes to make them look good. It's hours of water scrunching, the thirty products, and the defuser we used to get them to cooperate.
If you have curly hair, you understand certain things. Like...
You don't even think about going to bed with your hair down if it's wet and naturally curly. We all know how that mess looks in the morning: terrifying. It becomes a goofy, frizzy, unkempt mess.
Brush your hair? Ha! No. Absolutely not. You can't do that with curly hair. Unless you want to end up looking like a poodle, stay away from the brush when your hair has natural curls. It makes the curls get poofy and frizzy, and that's not a good look on anyone. The only time you brush curly hair is when it's still wet. That's it.
People, for some reason, always want to touch your curls. They want to play with your curly hair. Usually, it's people with straight hair that are trying to be nice and admire the mess your hair is. But, when they touch your curls, they try and run their fingers through it like you can with straight hair. Not only will the encounter a forest of knots, but if your curls were cooperating that day, forget it. Now your hair is going to look like cotton candy: fluffy.
The summer is your hair's worst nightmare when you have natural curls. The humidity destroys you. You don't even consider attempting to straighten it in the summer, because as soon as you step outside, your hard work has gone to waste.
You dread getting your hair wet at the beach or in a pool unless you have a brush with you, because you know it won't dry right. You know when you go home to wash it after it's dried with chlorine or salt in it, the tangles will take an hour alone to brush out.You don't get those pretty beachy waves: oh no. You get a mess that you have to deal with later.
After hearing all this, still think you want curly hair?
Maybe. I've grown to love mine, but it took years of mastering the art of making it happy, and learning the rules on how to care for it in certain situations.
