The Chicago Cubs have won the 2016 World Series!
Yes, that is an accurate sentence and I have never been more proud of a team in my life. As I’m sure everyone knows, The Chicago Cubs played an extremely intense game with the Cleveland Indians this last Wednesday. This day signifies the day that the Cubs have finally broken their curse and won the World Series! November 2, 2016, will forever go down in history as one of the greatest games ever played. After a 108 year drought, the Cubbies have successfully taken a major W! Cubs fans everywhere will remember this day in 2016 for their entire lives. With a final score of 8-7 in the 10th inning, the Cubs emerged victoriously and everyone collectively went crazy.
When I was a child, I asked my dad why he even liked the Cubs if they didn’t win very often. He said, “It’s not about how often they win or how often they lose. I love them because my dad loved them. They’re our team. Win or lose, I’ll stand by them.” I remember this really well because it was something that gave me hope. I’d never thought much about sports or how many fans have unrelenting love for their teams. Since that day, I’ve also shown love for my Cubbies.
I have been guilty of not watching every game every season. I’m not a die-hard fan, but after that game, you’d better believe I will be parked in front of the TV or I will be showing love up in Wrigley Field for every season to come.
Collectively, I’ve never seen more people who aren’t fans join in to show support to our Cubs. I saw tweet after tweet saying, “I’m not even a Cubs fan, but GO CUBS!” I’ve never seen my Twitter feed blow up so fast. After every intense play, I was checking my TL to see everyone’s reactions. Most looked about like this, “Rizzzooooooo!” or “Baaaaeeeezzzzz!”
Game 7 was one of the most intense, butt-clenching, nausea inducing games I have ever seen in my life. Not only were the Cubs and Indians battling fiercely to keep a lead, but there was a 17 minute delay due to rain in the top of the 10th inning. I will eagerly admit, there were like 15 times in the entire game that I was 100% sure I was going to hurl. As soon as Rajai Davis hit the home run that would bring in two runs in order to tie the game, I nearly lost my mind. I didn’t lose faith though. I proudly sang “Go Cubs Go” for half an hour, while also covering my eyes and praying to the Lord that we would pull through and #FlytheW.
A huge shout-out to MVP, Ben Zobrist, for having the 6th highest-leverage hit in World Series history. In order for this to happen Kyle Shwarber hit a single and Kris Bryant nearly hit a homer. During Bryant’s fly, Albert Amora advanced second. With Anthony Rizzo coming up, the Indians made the choice to purposefully walk. Zobrist had some pretty good hits this season, and several outs, but he wouldn’t be out this time. Congrats, Zobrist! You deserved it!
I’m especially grateful to see the Cubs win for my loved ones in Heaven. While most of us have been waiting our entire lives, I can’t imagine how excited our older generations are to finally see a win come from our beloved Cubbies.
The drought is finally over, and the curse has been broken! Hey Chicago, what do you say? Cubs won the World Series today!
