I remember when Taylor Swift did not show up with snakes in music videos and shaming every person that brought her down. I remember when there was a time, Taylor Swift was the country sound that everyone was dying to listen to. I also know that not everyone is going to agree with my opinions on Taylor Swift. Many are not on the “T-Swizzle” train. Don’t count me out, everybody! I am not a fan of her newest CD as much as I want to be.
Anyways, the point of this story is her first concert tour was coming to town when I lived in Spokane. I was so excited! I begged my mom and dad for months on months when her tour was announced.
“Mom, Taylor Swift is coming to Spokane! I have to go!” I pleaded with her for months on end to try and attend this concert. I even told her I would do extra chores and things that she knew I was not willing to do for just anything.
Of course, she took me seriously.
So, when 2009 rolled around, her concert dates were officially announced, and I was so ecstatic! My friend, Sam, and I were some of her biggest fans and we wanted to go with all of our hearts!
Nonetheless, we were extremely nervous since there was limited time before we could go get the tickets. My friend stood in line at Spokane Arena for hours waiting for the ticket booths to open. Me? I told my mom that the only thing I wanted for my birthday was the tickets! To my surprise, I was allowed to come with her to the BX (Base Exchange) for the day.
For anyone who doesn’t know what I am talking about, the Base Exchange was like a smaller version of Target. I guess that would be the best description for it. It has clothes, food, garden tools, electronics, and even a jewelry department. I was a military kid, so I grew up being able to go to those on a consistent basis.
Continuing the story, my mom brought me to the front of the Ticket Office. What was neat about this place was they could help you find airplane tickets cheap and concert tickets cheap. Usually, a concert would keep a certain amount of tickets on the side for certain groups of people, such as military personnel. The room was fairly large, with a desk in the middle and chairs sitting around it.
My mom walked up to the man and stated that we were there to try and snatch Taylor Swift “Fearless” Tour tickets. I was so excited and started jumping up and down next to my mom. Take this into account, I was in the 8th grade and jumping around like a little girl. I did not care. This was going to be my first concert ever!
The man told us to sit down to wait and so we did as we were told. I am still jumping around in my seat in front of the desk. My mom had to tell me to calm down and it was the most amusing way she said so. She leaned over to me and stated, “Okay, Miss Excited, you need to calm down!” I kept hugging her continuously since she was able to do this. I knew that money was usually always tight, but I had told her that this would replace any birthday gifts that she had in mind.
However, one of my worst fears came to light. The man at the desk looked at me with a concerned look. Oh no, what was he about to say?
“Ma’am, the site is not working right, and it seems like they are selling in large bundles. They shouldn’t be allowed to do this, but I don’t think I can get you a ticket.”
Those words “I don’t think I can get you a ticket” hit me as hard as a car ramming into the back of the bus (That is a story for another time). My face fell so far into the ground and I started freaking out. I wasn’t going to be able to see my idol in concert!
I stared at my mom in complete horror as her face fell as well.
“I don’t know what to tell you, honey. We might not be able to get these tickets.”
Hearing those words out of my Mom’s mouth just started the waterworks. I started crying and crying. I felt like Alice from “Alice in Wonderland” not being able to stop. I rubbed my glasses out of the way as my face became tear stained. My mom looked at me with so much pity.
What was I going to do?! I had to see Taylor Swift plus my best friend was going to! I would have to hear about it from her for weeks on end. I just continuously cried in that seat in the office with the man and my mom.
I don’t remember what exactly happened the rest of the day in February 2009. I remember looking up at the guy with my depressed look and he almost couldn’t keep eye contact with me. I was this kid who just wanted concert tickets.
“Let me try something.”
Those words gave me no sense of hope as he had been continuously trying to get the tickets from the site and the bundlers that were rigging the system. However, when I put my head back down, my mom nudged me a little. What, Mom? Do you want my dreams to be crushed even more?
I still lifted my head and to my surprise, the man was handing me the Taylor Swift concert tickets I had coveted. I was acquiring my dream! Are you kidding? I was going to the concert of the year! I squeezed that man so hard and my mom too!
As we were leaving that office, my mom leaned over and whispered to me, “You know you crying was probably the only reason we were able to get these tickets.” My cheeks went so red as I felt like I had cheated the system, but I didn’t necessarily care. I was going to Taylor Swift!
May 14, 2009 was one of the most exciting nights in my entire life.
Yes, I bawled for concert tickets to one of the biggest pop stars of the year, and I am proud! Wouldn't you do anything for something you desperately wanted?
