Halloween is the time of year where everyone can dress up as whatever they like, however they like. Though it is important to have a unique sense of freedom and style, some costumes pose questions. Most Halloween costumes in this generation are especially revealing and the differences in the clothing now and from a few years ago can be seen almost too clearly. Costumes cost an absurd amount of money for such a small amount of fabric and “decent” costumes are getting harder and harder to find as the years go by. Is it really worth it? Is it worth the hassle of finding a good costume and spending all that money? People, and parents in particular, have many different opinions.
Many parents wonder if it is really necessary to buy their kids costumes that are far ahead of their age. I asked my parents for their opinions on the subject and my father responded, “They have moved the adult costumes down to the teen costumes and even younger.” This is all too true, and though some people see nothing wrong with the costumes, others find it much too sexual for the younger children. The money involved in buying the costumes is also an issue. It seems ridiculous to pay for a costume that most likely will only be used once and that is barely there anyway. It seems like now, the costumes that have the most fabric and are actually reasonably to wear are the highest price, which doesn't seem fair at all.
It is difficult for some to understand why some Halloween costumes of this generation are made to be more revealing. A lot of people believe that Halloween is the chance to dress up and to be something other than yourself, like a firefighter, a princess or a zombie. None of these are presented as sexy figures, so why are the costumes made to be that way? Making those costumes far more revealing than they should be seems to defeat the purpose of even dressing up as something else when it is not the real thing. The costumes have been altered so much and are far past the idea of being just “cute” for Halloween.
