Before I begin, I’d like state that I am a narcissist and a misanthrope that wishes to see the world burn between his own two feet. Therefore, I will begin my analysis on mainstream media and how it affects the interwebs; primarily Twitter and your friends from high school.
Back in high school, I was an introverted loner that enjoyed watching people get into arguments on Twitter. It was the main source of entertainment for my friends and I. We would always laugh about who could roast who better. Basically meaning, “Who had the better jokes against another person's insecurities?” (That’s classic high school for you). Anyways, after graduating from high school, I moved out of the state as soon as possible. I felt the need to get a breath of fresh air and maybe find a better perspective on life from the poisonous school system and the ignorant little children that come with it. After moving away to college, I have made nothing but positive memories (besides the few situations that I could have handled better). That being said, I deleted my Twitter because I now have better priorities to focus on; myself.
Two years into college, I have decided that I’ve matured quite enough. I gave it a shot to create another Twitter account. Rather than focusing on who could roast on who better in high school, I thought Twitter would be a good way to streamline my own work and network with like-minded individuals with skillsets similar to that of my own. However, that did not happen. I followed all of my old high school buddies to see what was going on back in good ol’ Saginaw, Texas. Sad to say, they are where they always were. Barbecuing on someone’s lawn while having a beer. I really care for each and everyone of them. I hope they’re doing well (but, I will have to use you guys as subjects for the greater good of all of humanity).
The tone in their tweets have calmed down, I would assume because their maturity levels have grown as well. But, they’re essentially the same people that I knew and loved; obsessed with their fashion sense and taste in music. After creating my Twitter account, I went back down to good ol’ Saginaw, Texas for a cultural event that was significant to my ethnicity. I linked up with all of my high school buddies to see what they were going on about. Maybe they’re enjoying the college life as well. Maybe they found a project that they could be passionate about. Nope! The conversations went a little something like this. “Hey who that bitch over there with the crop top?” or, “Yo you listen to this new Migos album yet?” (My friends enjoy hip-hop culture very much, yes). But, these conversations will always lead back to their clothes or a sports team that they are rooting on. Nothing else. Let me tell you what all of these things have in common; media consumption.
All of these things exist for the sake of being consumed and the fact that you could market and sell another person's talent into a three-minute video sure as hell defines the term that I googled but could not find, which is Consumer Media. What I define as Consumer Media is a piece of information that can be consumed with no real benefit (unless you find yourself in a desert with nothing but piss and a camel’s organs, than sure, you are alive). A person could watch sports for hours on end, and as long as it sparks up a good conversation with their buddies for banters sake then it will continue to live on. They will pay to watch these events, betting money on a team that they’ve been rooting on for years. If their team wins, it gives that person bragging rights over another's to determine that their intellect was greater on that specific subject, but also induces camaraderie. It saves them just enough time to go back to work and fix a broken light pole. It also justifies the amount of money that they have spent on their team's’ merchandise. Another reason why they would buy their teams gear is because they have pride. Pride to represent their state. Therefore, The Denver Broncos generate a nice chunk of change for their state. Let me reiterate that, State. When connecting the word State, you link it back to the government. What the government tries to do is figure out how they can recirculate money into the economy at a faster rate to the amount that we are currently spending.
My point is that America is a purgatory that wishes to drains your funds while also making sure you are entertained. After all, the famous words of Russell Crowe exist for a reason. “Are you not entertained?" Who exactly says that? An entertainer that has appeased the crowd. The crowd is the person that you are, currently. You are looking for a way of being appeased and given reason to continue your day job. You believe that if you follow these cultures and have something to enjoy for yourself, you will be okay. I believe you will be okay. But, if you are like me, you wish to be the one to create change. You crave growth and crave to find a way to tell your own personal narrative. If you are what I say you are, you will be the one standing after brutally murdering your competition and then asking the crowd if they are entertained. In a world that has been controlled by consumerism and social media, there is only one group of people who can stand to make a change. The entertainers and the people behind them.
We are at the point of technological growth that airtime could mean everything. It quite literally shifts the balance of our world. If a world leader, for example, declares that they are going to war with another country on Tumblr, that could probably still incite the destruction of our world. What would happen is that if this declaration is from the correct source, they would broadcast this on television. With the entire populations’ eyes glued to their TV (and cellphone) screens, the masses will lead to an uproar of panic and death. The reason I use Tumblr as an example, is that as long as the source is confirmed back to the creator on any platform, you create liability. Access to information is infinite and if a country is pleading for solace from capitalism, then numerous governments around the world have a problem. Their citizens will spark an uproar and protest that their government should stop bombing Syria. How does capitalism fight against this new form of media that inhibits all of their citizens besides censorship (you can only censor so much)?
Well, how do you hide or discredit liability? You don’t, you over saturate it with nonsense media like the NFL. Now, before I get assassinated or framed for something, I’m gonna stop there. The sun will eventually blow up and diminish everything you believe in, but if you crave the growth that I yearn for, than you should know that it begins with realizing where flaws exist. Become the flaw that others will absorb and you might have a good time on our planet earth. Who knows, it might land you a private island in the Pacific. But, if you become this flaw, realize that it comes with a liability. Your audience and the decisions that they make from your actions. If you also question why people care about sports over the destruction of countries, than this article is for you.
