Confidence Is Not Self-Love

Yet we tend to use the terms interchangeably all the time.

Confidence Is Not Self-Love
Forbes

For a very long time, I had always believed that I had low self-esteem because of how unforgiving I was to myself when I wasn’t perfect. However, throughout my life, I was always certain that I would be successful in achieving my goals. Even if I never admitted to anyone, I knew I was competent enough to be successful.

Take my application to Penn, for instance. Even if my test scores were not the highest and my grades weren’t absolutely perfect, I was pretty confident that I would get in. Of course, given the nature of Ivy League admissions, I never told anyone how I felt, because I did not want people to think I was an arrogant asshole, and I was aware that I could be wrong. It’s almost cute in retrospect, as statistically I was much more likely to be rejected. Somewhere in my head, though, I knew I was qualified.

I am confident. I do not doubt my decisions; I have immense trust in my judgment and intuition. I know I am a smart, talented, and kind person. But it’s when I’m anything less than perfect when the negative thoughts start creeping inside my head.

Again, one can look at my application to Penn. When I did see my SAT scores, lower than Penn’s standards, I beat myself up for not studying harder. Rationally I knew these scores were very difficult to receive, but it was not an excuse for me; I was better than that. These negative thoughts circled around my brain and never ceased to stop until I would find something else to beat myself up for.

Many have praised me for my high expectations, but with high expectations should come lots of self-love. I am in the process of working on self-love and self-care, but it’s much easier to believe I’m fabulous than to forgive myself when things don’t go exactly as planned. Being in a high-stress environment such as Penn, where everyone is striving for perfection, will make this task not only more difficult, but more necessary.

In conclusion, we should stop using confidence and self-love interchangeably, because they are quite different things. And of course, we must always remember that we rock, and know to take very good care of ourselves when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
