Confessions Of A Foodie

For the one who orders a drink, appetizers for the group, a starter for themselves, an entree, and dessert (and maybe another drink at some point).

Confessions Of A Foodie

Guilty of...

spending too much on food

taking too much time to take pictures of the food

ordering too much food

or taking too long to pick just one thing

...and the list goes on

This article is for all my foodies out there, who, in this big wide world, are just trying to try all the amazing food it has to offer.

I'm not sure when I started to explore food or at least enjoy trying different food. My parents were lucky that I was never a picky kid, and I ate what was cooked or ordered almost always. I think at some point in high school when I started going out more by myself or with friends, I began to notice food that I was not used to, but was open to trying.

Thus, began the journey that has led up to this point, and I've only developed my love for food not just on a purely physical level, but also on the cultural and social level. It's incredible how much history and customs food can teach you.

Maybe you're at a friends' house for dinner, and you notice that the way they make meatballs is specific to their family based on where their family is from in Italy or even what part of America they moved to. Maybe your other friends' family has a special tradition of making dumplings with a different kind of meat because, at one point in time, one of their family members decided that using chicken is better than beef.

However, in my opinion, the best part of being a foodie is you get to see that extra sparkle when traveling.

Food and culture are so interweaved that there is no possible way to have one without the other.

Each country, each city, each town, each restaurant has its own take on how to make something special out of the ingredients they're left with. And creating that something special is art.

What I find even more special is street food. There is a raw, authentic, local vibe to the food that you really can't recreate anywhere else. And there's nothing better than eating local food with the locals and getting just a taste of their culture and lifestyle.

Foodies understand that specialty and respect it, and unfortunately, we may not be able to recreate the piece like our talented chef friends can, but we can try our best to appreciate it. This is why we take so long to order just to order too much and spend too much and take too many pictures - because we want to be a part of the sparkle and capture the art.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
