About two years ago, I was having a really bad day. I don't remember exactly why, but I was feeling down in the dumps. Later that morning, the girl with the locker next to me told me she liked my shirt. I thanked her and continued on with my day, but really it meant a lot more than she knew. Those four words she said to me instantly made my day a little better and it made me realize something that changed my outlook on everything- man, words have so much power. What others say to you can encourage you or crush your spirits. This may seem dramatic, but think about it. When someone tells you that you'll be excellent at your future career or that you are a wonderful parent, that probably makes you feel pretty great. But when someone (even jokingly) makes a remark about something you're self conscious about, it can easily ruin your mood for awhile.
As human beings, we want validation, recognition, and acknowledgement- it's natural. So when you receive a compliment, you can get feelings of self worth, confidence, and joy. So in a time where so many feel alone and disconnected, compliments are so important.
It doesn't have to be the most profound compliment-even complimenting someone on their appearance or personal attributes can be worth so much. Your parents have probably told you before that you never knows what going on in someone's life, and it's true. You know your cashier at the store with the cute hair? She might have panic attacks everyday before coming to work because her coworkers, managers, and customers are so nasty. That person walking in the street with the cute shirt? She might be dealing with grief and having a hard time finding joy in everyday. That little girl in your neighborhood with the prettiest blue eyes? Maybe she is having a difficult time with bullies at school and is looking for a sign that kindness is still out there and that suicide isn't the answer. And that boy with the cute shoes just might not be having the best week.
So, pay someone a compliment. Perhaps make it your goal to compliment five strangers today. Even if they just respond with a thank you, you never know how much it might mean to them. And plus, that positivity you're giving to others might make your day a little brighter too.
