Communism: Why It Doesn't Work

There is a plethora of forms of government in the world, all with various motives and methods of ruling the masses in an orderly fashion. While all of these methods can work in theory, the issue is the practice and employment of these various forms of government.

This article is part one of a series of articles that will be individually exposing the flaws of every major form of government. Via the message of these articles, I hope to enlighten those who read on about how flawed government can be due to the varying elements of ruling a sovereign state.

Today we will be taking about the "big C"—communism. Communism is currently lauded by a few select individuals, but is also disliked by quite a large portion of, not only Americans, but other global citizens. What exactly is it that breeds such a heavy disdain for a form of government? In essence, I think that the majority of the people who dislike communism simply learned to not like it due to social pressures. They were taught that the communists are evil, and that capitalism will prevail. I think it is vital to realize that communism, along with most forms of government, is horribly flawed. To view communism from an unbiased standpoint is necessary in analyzing its components.

First off, communism bases itself on the elimination of social class, and that the means of production should belong to the proletariat, or the people. Communism is all about the masses being in control, and the masses being equal in terms of financial power. Sounds pretty great, right? Everyone living in peace together without money to separate them? Well, that is what Karl Marx had in mind when writing the “Communist Manifesto." He wished for a utopia to contain all of these wondrous elements, but as with the majority of problems involving some form of organized practice, the people are to blame.

In communism everyone earns the same, and everyone has everything accessible to them, because it is shared and the government owns it. Education, health care, you name it. The problem with giving everyone the same wages and benefits, is that it breeds stagnation. Using the most basic of examples, if someone makes the same as a doctor as they do not work at all, they will more than likely choose to do nothing at all. Why waste the extra energy for the same exact benefit? That causes overall national production to slow down, and eventually leading to the decline, or even dismantling of the communist nation. I also bet most people reading this would love to own their own home, and have a myriad of personal belongings. Communism will not stand for that. Everything is shared, and it is shareable because it is owned by the government.

Another problem is what faces any form of extremism; Communism is considered to be on the far left of the political spectrum. This usually leads to some form of dictatorship, as with any far left or far right leaning nation. Unlike classic democracy, you cannot just get rid of your leader after their term is up. They have to either die by natural causes, or be taken down in a coup. Whoever takes the helm of the country, is there to stay for quite a while. They might even have a lineage prepared even when their leader dies. A good example of this is the Castro and Kim family in Cuba and North Korea, respectively.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
