Why I'm Not Writing About the Election

Yes, the title is ironic. We have the freedom of speech, lets use it.

Why I'm Not Writing About the Election

The morning of November 9th 2016 for me will never be forgotten. For some, this news brings great joy because their chosen candidate has pulled through and won. For others, like myself, the news brought about a pit that I have never felt about politics before. For the first time actually frightened and embarrassed about the place where I am a citizen.

All day long Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even Snapchat blew up of either excitement and patriotism themed rants, or very much the opposite. #Makeamericagreatagain or #notmypresident were scattered all over my computer screen much before 10am American time.

Sitting in my class with Italian and other foreign students I received many comments, questions, and apologies. They were genuinely curious how the election worked and how he won. I gave a short explanation as far to my knowledge as I could.

In honesty writing about this major event in history took quite a bit of thought. I try to stray away from politics as much as I can, but there comes a point, especially with this election were I realizedI wanted to say something. Freedom of speech is a powerful tool that we have and I am proud of this, and because of that I do not want to remain silent. I have been provided this platform and it would be a waste for me not to use it.

I feel for those who are genuinely scared I can not blame you. Those that are supportive of our new elect, I don't understand or agree. So those are my personal thoughts.

Though looking further, I have always believed in love and respect and I will continue this. So respect other opinions, yes I know it is hard but keep in mind you want yours respected as well.

Also, and most importantly, don't give up on love and hope. I can not tell you what will happen in the future of this, but know that no matter who sits in the oval office, you can still exude love and always hope for a better future.

So whether it's climate change, woman's rights, the economy, or education you are free to speak your mind. This is your country and it's your right to say something.

Write Facebook rants if you want, write articles even, no president can take away your freedom of speech, just keep in mind kindness.

Peace. Love

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
