There seems to be an unfair taboo surrounding Communications majors, that their field of study is lazy and unimportant. I beg to differ.
1. It's not the easy way out.
Just because I'm not studying to be a doctor, lawyer, or any other job that requires education further than a college degree, doesn't mean it's not a valid career. It's not the major for those who fail their first-choice major classes and have to switch at the last minute, and it's not the major people choose just because they don't know what they actually want to major in. Most Comm majors are majoring in it for sole reason that they have a passion for it and they're good at it. Isn't that a crazy concept?
2. It's not just a news anchor position.
Producers, Public Relations publicists, music journalists, film critics, fashion bloggers -- the world of Communications is so broad that, lucky for us, there are millions of different areas we can find ourselves in. They all go back to the goal of educating people about things that are happening in society, so you're welcome.
3. Those in Communications are revolutionizing the way we interact with the world.
How do you think social media has become so big? The industry of Communications is constantly evolving and changing for the better, coming up with new ways for us to spread information to each other. It'll never become outdated, as people like to declare print journalism is becoming, because there is too much need for it and so many new advances to be made.
4. It's not about the money.
Hard to imagine in our materialistic world, but money is not the most important thing in the world. I'm making a living out of doing it, so I'm just fine. Besides, doing something you love at a smaller wage is way better than doing a job you despise while making six figures. Plus, if you get a high-up role in a big company, you actually could be making a lot of dough, which really makes it the best of both worlds.
5. Bottom line: we're storytellers.
The field of Communications is very creative and not everybody can do it, being that the goal is to grab and keep a person's attention long enough to inform them and make them feel some sort of raw emotion. (The fact that the average person's attention span is six seconds doesn't make that very easy.)
People in Communications are unsung heroes, the behind-the-scenes little elves that keeps you from being ignorant. Remember that next time somebody tells you their a Comm major, and you feel the need to just reply, "oh."
