When the hustle and bustle of college gets overwhelming, when assignments, tests, and papers never end, and sleep seems like a distant cousin, twice-removed, sometimes a pause to reflect, collect, and motivate yourself can be a blessing.

This seems pretty simple, but I have found in the midst of being busy it takes a lot to put everything down and stop for just a moment. Here are some tricks and tips to help you take a quick moment to relax, refocus, and keep on going.

1. Phone Breaks

Yes, we all feel the urge to check that snapchat or quickly scroll through social media. This quickly goes south as 1 minute turns in to 5 and then 10 and then 30 and then I've fallen asleep.

The best way to power through and keep yourself on track is to set a 5 minute timer and take a break to check your phone. When the timer is up, put the phone down and get back to work for the next 30 minutes to an hour before the next break.

2. Motivation

When all the answers seem wrong and studying for a test looks like a mountain, take a moment to read a devotion or read some motivational quotes. I have found that creating a Pinterest board full of inspirational quotes, girl power, and cute designs helps me smile when school makes me want to cry.

3. ~food~

FOOD! Who doesn't love to eat! I am always thankful for a good meal in college. While studying, reward yourself with food when you get answers right or eat some fruit/candy (you do you) in between pages on a study guide.

This makes studying fun and motivational!

4. Music

If you are like me, I need absolute silence to focus and get my work done. Every once in a while, listen to one song that lifts you up. This could be any song, whatever pumps you up is perfect to relieve some stress in the middle of a hard day.

5. Exercise

On study break intervals, walk around or do some quick exercises. Exercise has been shown to boost cognitive functions, which will help you ace that test.

6. Go Outside

Dorm rooms, study areas, and desks can feel a little cramped after a few hours. Go outside, feel the sun, or get some fresh night air. It's always nice to step away from studying for just a moment to regroup before returning to the books.

These 6 tips and tricks are sure to help you pause in the middle of the chaos and relax, regroup, and focus on getting through the finish line.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
